Winter Solstice
Mon., Dec. 21, 2009, 12:47 PM EST (17:47 UT), marks the solstice—the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere
Winter's almost a week away.
And just because it gets hot early, doesn't mean the official start of summer has been moved up. ;)
Never really understood that. The Solstice is when the north pole is it's farthest from the sun, when the days are shortest, so that would indicate to me that it would be the middle of winter, not the beginning.

Citizen- exactly.
The solstice is the HEIGHT of winter in terms of solar effect. Cooling actually begins at the autumnal equinox, roughly Sept 22. (Which is considered the beginning of fall. Go figure!)
PN- I changed your title again. Its embarassing to read about snow in the middle of "summer" in Denmark. Now, maybe YOU think December is "summer" in Denmark, but... most everyone else knows differently.
Obviously, you're free to change it back again, but I wouldn't recommend it as it just pounds one more nail into the coffin of your credibiity.
