The point being that people who insult, denegrate, and generally make asses of themselves on the Internet are as "retarded" as a child with Down's Syndrome.
The picture used to illustrate this "joke" is of someone's brother or son.
This is not something that could be "taken as offensive." This is offensive. That is the only valid point here.

Fair enough. But I don't agree. I'm of the opinion that nothing is off limits, in terms of comedy, under the right circumstances and context.
Point of fact, I'm not just a teacher - but a Special Ed teacher. And working within that context, I can tell you I'm far from the only one in the field to make an off-color comment.
I am not mocking those who have mental retardation. They have no control over this, and are deserving of no ridicule. People who have normally developed minds who then choose to engage in such a "retarded" manner, are very much deserving of such ridicule.
Which will not sway your opinion on the subject, I've no doubt. But it is the way it is. There's always someone to be offended at something, particularly when dealing with a hot-button issue.

You have just confirmed all my worst fears. It is particularly enlightening to hear that other people you work with also have a tendency to make derogratory remarks about mentally handicapped children and adults. This is a frightening thought, not a justification.
How broadminded of you to note that handicapped people have "no control" over their condition. Since my sister has Down's Syndrome and has a far more informed outlook on life than you seem to have, I can only note that I am sure that she would overlook your particularly stupid actions and arguments because you clearly have no control over that either.
I, however, am not so forgiving.
You assert that you are not mocking handicapped people. I am clearly not as sophisticated as you because it seems to me that that is exactly what you are doing.
There is no circumstances or context for this "joke." It lacks wit, insight, and wry observation. Though the fact that you are criticizing "people who have normally developed minds who then choose to engage in such a "retarded" manner," and "are very much deserving of such ridicule" shows a lack of self-knowledge that is actually laughable.

Sorry I'm not PC enough for you. But again, my remark was not directed at anyone with actual disabilities. I explained this, if you have no desire to even consider another viewpoint for even a second, and instead stand by your knee-jerk reaction, that is your perogotive.

There comes a time in some arguments when you just have to step back and realise that the other person is never going to see your point of view. Clearly, we have reached this point. I think that I understand your argument perfectly but I do not find it valid.
A person's idea of political correctness often comes down to what they personally find offensive, usually because it attacks, undermines, or mocks someone that they care about.
Although I cannot see how your attitude would make it possible, I sincerely hope that you are a good and caring special ed teacher and treat those you look after with the dignity and grace that they deserve.

Yes i hopw he treats them like human beings, not inanimate objects that can be played around with like their toys. That is one thing that pisses me off about school, some of the dicks treat them like that. And i admit that i may have in the past joind in, just a little bit. But i stopped it, and kicked myself in the ass for it, hell i had to take ridalin from my second year in first grade to fifth grade.
Now on to the PC. Man you sound like an english teacher, talking about how jokes need to have a certain structure and all, just like an english teachetr would. For me a good joke has to be either really strict, or compleatly like JACKASS, FAIMLY GUY, SOUTH PARK, or somthing like that, idiotic. Now i cross the line with Hidi, and Spencer, those two are just plain jerks.
