`G.I. Joe' rolls to box-office victory with $54.7M

LOS ANGELES — "G.I. Joe" has claimed the box-office spoils of war with a $54.7 million opening weekend for the action flick based on the Hasbro toys. Meryl Streep baked up a hit with the Julia Child tale "Julie & Julia."
The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com:

1. "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," Paramount, $54,713,046, 4,007 locations, $13,654 average, $54,713,046, one week.

That sure is a sweet take, for one crappy movie !

Hey, I actually enjoyed that movie. It was a lot of fun and actually delved into the backstory of the JOES much more than I thought it would. Overall, a good popcorn flick.

Agreed.

I think the main thing that JOE has in it's favor is that it's FUN. Great action sequences, cool-looking villains, snarky heroes, sweet ninja, hot chicks with awesome weapons... what more can you ask for in a summer movie? :)

I don't know what I expected from this movie, but I came away thinking . . . "meh."

Of course, I have to take into account that historically I haven't liked ANYTHING I've ever seen at that particular theater until the 2nd viewing. For instance, saw "Elf" at the same theater and didn't like it. At all. For some reason we rented it the next year and now it's one of our favorite flicks. Go figure.

So perhaps when we rent this movie down the road, I might enjoy it more. But is it bad that I had half of the "mystery" figured out halfway through the movie? Or was it already widely known? About the Baroness' brother, that is.

Was it supposed to be a mystery? The casting choice was very public, and I thought it was pretty obvious from the first scene(s).

And yet Transformers 2 tripled that amount.
Transformers 2 is a good example of how an excellent franchise can be completely, and utterly ruined by just one man. Michael Bay.

I liked GI Joe... but I have notoriously bad taste in movies and just adore all those sci fi channel made for movies:)

Might I just be a bitter old Firefly fan who broods ,4 years after our BDM, about it doing far worse at the box office than these brainless, bright shiny objects being held up for the viewing public as 'entertainment'.

Iron Man ? Spider Man? Sure, I get that. Terminator ? It's a bona-fide franchise. But GI Joe? And he's not even holding true to the 'GI' part, as I understand it. He fights for the U.N., not the good ole USA.

Granted, I never kept up w/ the story as it evolved through the 80's and 90's.... playing w/ dolls never really took w/ me, and I paid no attention to the cartoons.

Oh well

G.I. JOE is a toy, so youth are the audience it is aimed at. Parents don't have many choices when it comes to taking there children to the theater. So you're going to have a surge in the first week or two. To be honest, if I remember the trailer, this movie seemed on the violent side.

That it was. Lots of killing for killing's sake, it seemed to me. I mean, I'm all for action, but that was a bit much. Fist fights, kung fu, car chases, blowing stuff up . . . heck ya! But I just couldn't get past the killing for some reason. Must be getting old

As for the G.I. part being taken away? I'm like you, Auraptor. I knew there was the toy and the cartoon and the "Knowing is half the battle" business, but I thought they were all American soldiers. They had to make it more global to appeal to all nations, though, which is understandable. I thought they said the U.S. started it and other nations signed on? Anyway . . . like I said, I understand why they had to make it more international. But G.I. Joe is a "nickname" of sorts for the American G.I. right? Kinda like how they took that little tidbit about Superman out of "Superman Returns". In that movie he stood for "Truth, Justice . . . all that stuff." It'll be interesting to see if they make Captain America more global.
