http://www.formosa-translation.com/chinese/ an EXCELLENT site for visual chinese. If you need a symbol, this is the easiest place to find it.
http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ just for basic translation - gives you the translation in Chinese letters, so you'll need the next link to translate each one into pidgin (english letters). This is neccessary if you want what you wrote to actually be grammatically correct - Chinese often has multiple words that mean similiar things, but if you don't speak the language, you don't know which word is the appropriate one - this helps you not look stupid lol.
http://www.mandarintools.com/worddict.html this is a dictionary, you'll want to copy and paste from the babelfish site, then translate - it won't work, so when it tells you it can't do it, click on the translate each word link on the error message page, and go from there. This process can take a little work, but I feel it's worth it to feel I at least came CLOSE to using the words right.
http://www.insultmonger.com/swearing/mandarin.htm this is the BEST for truly NASTY swear words but BE WARNED!!! THIS PAGE HAS NAKED ADS!!! THIS IS AN ADULT PAGE, AND IS NOT SAFE FOR GENERAL EYES. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. But that aside, it's the BEST for really real swearing. Even has actual slang (some of it's kinda amusing).

http://www.behindthename.com/ the hands down, all-time, unquestionalbly, BEST site for naming a character. I use this site constantly for names that fit my characters. (I found my companion's name - Najwa Shula - there, it means "Secret Flame")

Thanks everyone for the nice thoughts, things may not have changed, exactly, but the general mood and stress level have relaxed a bit, thank goodness, and I got a post up!
That said, I'm very sorry, Mei, if Shade seems a little harsh. She's only reacting, in-character, to what's going on around her. I don't ignore in-character actions, if you say you did it, then in her reality, you did, so I'm not trying to be harsh, just deal with what's going on. I don't know if it SOUNDED harsh to anyone else, but as I was writing, Shade was a little miffed, I could tell, and I tried to keep her in line. Mostly, she just wants to get this part over with, and either get hired, or move on to another ship. She HATES job interviews lol.

I do use Behind the Name whenever I'm looking for a new character's name. I agree it's most excellent.
Shade didn't sound too harsh to me, when I read your post. Ain't it great when the characters speak in your ear and you just write it down for them?
Jackie's not doing that for me yet, but I hope she will once I get to know her better.

Maybe harsh wasn't the word for it - I reread my post, and yeah, it doesn't sound harsh. Maybe it was just Shade not answering the question and being all annoyed that made me think that.
I have several characters that I swear I just try and write as fast as I can to keep up with - they are totally the ones talking, not me lol. Shade is already one - but she's a sort of permutation of another character. I think of her as what the other character would have been if life had not taken the rather drastic left turn it took for her, and instead stayed on the same path. Shade is what would have happened. I'm excited to try and play out that character. It's what the other one was SUPOSED to have been, but in RL things happened, and caused in-character changes, putting her in a position where she can't be who she used to be.
SO, yeah - loving the chance to really see who she was meant to be.
I can't WAIT for her to finally get to interact with everyone else!
