I know that a couple of people who are not real thrilled that some of us soldier-type guys shout out firefly-isms during combat, and I can honestly understand that. However, I hope that Joss and Tim read this and find it inspiring, and I hope that everyone feels their guts knot up as much as I did. . .and maybe a tear or two will well up in your eyes, as they are streaming down my face just from the telling of this. . .

As you all know, I've been a soldier stationed in Afghanistan for quite some time now. Many of you know that I'm posting this from my own home tonight, as I have been permitted to come home for ten days on leave. It's been a very long time since I've been home. I flew from Afghanistan to Frankfurt via military cargo jet (C-17 for those 'in the know'), and the next morning, we got on a commercial flight to Chicago. I got off the plane, grabbed my big-assed duffel bags and prepared to wait in line for customs, and to my delight, the Customs officers were pulling any soldier-types out of line and passing them through, with a pat on the back and a 'welcome home'. I immediately had to re-check my bags for my final flight, and after doing so, I made a beeline outside. I crossed the street and walked into the snow, the first I'd seen since January 2003, and stood at the base of the American Flag for a second before I finally became overwhelmed and fell to my knees. I grabbed a double handful of snow and rubbed it all over my face. When I stood up, I realized there were almost 20 other soldiers with me, all who had the same idea. Most of us didn't know each other at all, but for that moment, we were brothers who had been best of friends all our lives.
We decided to head on inside, and one young man, his name was Mike, was still overwhelmed with emotion and could not stand. Another soldier, a friend of his, went to lift Mike, and I took Mike's other arm. Mike smiled weakly and thanked us. Here's where it gets tough to even tell the story, and I hope Joss and Tim read this. . .

Mike's friend said, "You know the saying, Mikey. . .when you can't run anymore you crawl. . ." and before he could say anymore, I finished it for him. "And when you can't do that anymore, you find someone to carry you."

Mike and his buddy, and about half the guys who were standing there with us all smiled. We looked up at the flag and Mike said, "They didn't take the sky from us." Turns out they were all Browncoats, and they were home from Iraq for good.

Joss, Tim and all the rest of you. . .I don't know if you had any idea that what you created would be so powerful, and provide such inspiration for those of us who serve, but it does. Thank you.

And to all of you whom I've come to call my friends on this site, thank YOU. Because of your love and support, the 'bad guys' are unable to take the sky from ME.

I'M HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome home Static! Even if it is only for ten days, enjoy every minute of it my friend, you have more than earned it.

Great story. It does choke one up a bit. I remember when I got home from Iraq after Desert Storm and Desert Shield over ten years ago, and how the feeling of homecoming overwhelmed me.

I do hope that Joss and the cast read this story, and many more like it and know just how deeply they have touched all of us.

Great to hear you home safe Static, even if it's only for a bit.

Over Christmast, I flew out to Michigan and back (I live in Colorado). On the return flight, from Detroit to Denver, I saw a soldier across the isle from me. He still had Sand on his boots, so I could tell that he was just coming back from somewhere. I thought how happy he must be to be either coming home for good, or even on leave. It didn't really hit me until we were getting off the plane and his wife was there waiting for him. He was taller than me (I'm 6'2") and she was about 5'5" and he practically fell into her arms and the both stood their weeping. That's when it hit me that, whatever reason they are fighting for, we still need to do whatever we can to help our troops come home safe and sound and soon. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to serve overseas, so far from home. Great now I gotta go blow my nose....

Static,

Welcome home! I hope the days go REAL nice & slow for you. I have been in contact with Chris Buchanan (President of Joss' Mutant Enemy Productions), because the fans of Firefly are attempting to get copies of the DVD's to as many of our troops as we can. Chris is helping us with the details. I have just e-mailed him a link to your post...so I can just about guarantee that everyone there will see it & or hear about it.

Hand -- Salute!
Ready -- Two.

Enjoy your time home Static.

For all other browncoats -- something nobody's commented on is that if half of a random crowd of Iraq/Afgan war returnees were familiar with Fireflyisms, then the box set distribution efforts must be meeting with success.

Picture it. Firefly becoming a cultural/historical touchstone for a generation of our fighting forces...

Just a thought . . . wasn't there an Adam Baldwin site that the star himself often frequented? I tried to find it again with the idea that Static's moving story could be put where Mr. Baldwin could stumble upon it (or at least let other fans know how much something we all care about can be a source of comfort and brotherhood) but I can't find the darn thing.

Again, it's just a thought, and probably quite moot by this point.

That's enough lucidity for now,
'night.

The only 'Mod' is Haken, and I've never known him to moderate any of the threads on this site (to be fair, only a few have ever gotten heated enough to warrant mod-consideration). I also doubt that 'sticky' is currently implemented on this site; at least I've never seen a sticky post (although I guess he could stick a link to it in the 'features' or 'news' section)

therefore...*BUMP*.

I'm one of those damnable idealistic college students who thinks that there should never be war and that someday we'll see the end of it. So, being honest, I have to say that I'm not real sure that I'm happy about this war or any other. I wish that it had never started.

That being said, my grandfather was in WWII so he has a lot of strong opinions about our government and how it's run and so do I and we've gotten into more than a couple of yellin' matches about it.

But no matter what I think about any given war, I have never, WILL never, have anything but respect and admiration for the soldiers who put their lives on the line every day. Thank you for your sacrifice and the sacrifices of your family, Static.

Thank you.

So, Static, when should we re-start the letter-writing campaign? You won't be back over there for a bit yet. (Yay! ) Should we go ahead and send them now, or wait til you get back?
