Therein lies the pity of it all: that Joss Whedon has sold his contractual soul to Fox. Kinda gums up the works, eh?
I'd think that by now there's tv networks that understand a continuation of Firefly would be profitable in dvd sales, regardless of ratings it would accrue during it's initial airing. The precedent is out there.
I don't know the specifics of how it all went down when Whedon initially pitched the show back in '01/'02, but I get the possibility that Fox were the only folk then willing to chance bringing the idea to fruition. The tragedy now lies in the fact that the broadcast/selling rights now lie in the hands of those who are least willing or able to produce more of this awesome entertainment. Such that the process of transferring these rights to producers with the gumption and dollars required to bring it to small or large screens has become immensely complex, above and beyond the fact that the characters and the actors are aging with inaction. After all, it's been seven years since the concept, and four years of adventures since we've last had the opportunity to visit the 'verse. River's not a kid any more, y'see?
Still, remember the resurrection of Star Trek. Now, there's a relevant precedent if ever there was one.
It's doable, and I cling to that hope. But the franchise has to be wrested from the killing grip of Fox's blue hands.
