'Man on the Street' beaten down by the NCAA

In what was anticipated to be Dollhouse's best episode since its premiere, the 'Man on the Street' fantasy promised by the Dollhouse couldn't win against the thrilling reality of the NCAA tournament on CBS.

Earning just 2.6/5 and 4.13 million viewers, 'Man on the Street' came in third for the hour, which was good, but viewership for the series was actually down from last week's 4.33 million.

Here's a rundown of the viewership thus far:

Ghost - 4.7 million.
The Target - 4.22 million.
Stage Fright - 4.13 million.
Gray Hour - 3.5 million.
True Believer - 4.33 million.
Man on the Street - 4.13 million.

Umm... HAKEN, it beat "Friday Night Lights" AND is holding steady at over 4 million viewers. It's also is doing better than "Howie Do It". Not only do I see them renewing it, I think they'll move it to another night. I think FOX wants to keep Joss & J.J., ignore the geeks.

BSG vs Dollhouse... not a brilliant marketing maneuver by BSG. 2 hours was too long...

Sounds like Dollhouse did better than BSG.

Those are worse numbers than Firefly had in 2002, but there is a lot more competition now than there was then, plus more DVR use too. I'll bet the BSG finale hurt it too, but DVR numbers should be even higher than in previous weeks as well.

I'm betting that the Battlestar Galactica finale had more to do with Dollhouse ratings than the NCAA.

TRU CALLING didn't last two "real" seasons. Season Two is a whole six episodes long... and FOX didn't even air all of those!

TRU CALLING--the show FOX loved so much they cancelled it twice!

Which is why I said it was good that it came in third. However, for an episode that was much hyped as being the episode where "Dollhouse" as a series would finally hit its stride, it didn't fare much better in the ratings than its previous episodes.

If one looks at how "Dollhouse" is trending in terms of rating, it's more or less stuck in a doldrums since its initial premiere, which if it can't get out of soon, it stands a good chance that there won't be a return engagement for Echo and the Dollhouse.

Looking at the overall picture of where Dollhouse stands against competing series on the other networks, Dollhouse's rating is abysmal and below half of what series like "Ghost Whisperers," "Flashpoint," and "Numb3rs" are bringing in.

Also, on the subject of "Friday Night Lights." That series has always been the "underdog" on Fridays, "Dollhouse" is the new spanking hot babe on the block. The fact that FNL's ratings can go toe to toe against "Dollhouse" says something about how well FNL is actually doing and how poorly "Dollhouse" is being received.

On top of that, as poorly as FNL is performing against the other series, it is critically acclaimed and has a deal with Direct TV for the episodes to be aired on Direct TV first before it airs on NBC. As a result, ratings doesn't matter as much for FNL as it does for the series of other networks. Furthermore, production cost for the series is shared between Direct TV and NBC, making it a relatively inexpensive series to produced when compared to a series like "Dollhouse."

It's an unfortunate reality, but unless Dollhouse's ratings start showing some signs of life beyond the current 4.XX million viewers, it stands a good chance of being canceled--regardless of how good a series it is.

Huh. Gray Hour was a pretty good episode, imho, because it spent so much time with Echo herself. It was the first Dollhouse eppy that I wanted to watch a second time, so I'm a little surprised that it did so poorly. Then again, it was the unfortunate one that fallowed Stage Fright.
