It would be cooler to have a Clint Eastwood moment as they pull aside outer clothes to reveal a thick metal plate. The stake would be ruined and Buffy would be left with a wicked stinger running up to her shoulder.

1) Plate armor is very cumbersome. Requiring a great deal of time to get into and out, restricting mobility, and making lots of noise when you move almost ensuring the loss of surprise.

2) With enhanced slayer strength Buffy could probably drive a stake through even face hardened steel plate. Alternately the restriction on range of movement should set up plenty of decapitation opportunities.

3) Hard to blend in anywhere except a Ren Faire and those are mostly daylight events.

4) Plate armor tends to chafe.

I'm not saying it doesn't look cool, it's just that I thought Vamps were all bad asses who didn't NEED armor and such.

They need it to look cool. Since they're all about cool, it's obviously a necessity. Practicality has nothing to do with looking cool.
