This is indisputable fact, my friends. Wanna fight about it? I'm prepared.

The new Battlestar Galactica season 1 blows the living hell out of Dark Angel's first season.

I dispute your claim.

Only problem is that season one ends on a cliffhanger, so you have to see at least a few eps from 2 for a sense of closure.

Not a problem bud. I'll probably just get swept up in the whole thing and watch the lot anyway....

The New BSG is cold & clinical, without a real sense of humour, and devoid of relatable human situations; it is a dark space opera....that had no plan.

I agree that Firefly is still at the top of the list, and I also agree that Dark Angel Season One was very good. But in my opinion, there are quite a few others that I like more.

Not necessarily in this order:
Pushing Daisies
Wonderfalls
Battlestar Galactica One
American Gothic
Babylon 5 Three & Four
Buffy Two & Three
Angel Three & Four
Lost One & Four
Twin Peaks One

And even some non-genre stuff:
Arrested Development
Freaks and Geeks
Gilmore Girls Four & Five
Veronica Mars One

Sorry, Chris, but I think you're wrong about the humour in Dark Angel adding to the story, it was just the opposite for me. The compelling story of Max and her relationship with Logan was squandered on too many scenes with Sketchy, Herbal Thought and Original Cindy. They were just not believable in that environment, or perhaps I should say they weren't welcome to this viewer.

I have the dvds for all of the ones I listed, and will get the final ones of Pushing Daisies, BSG and Lost when they are available, and will probably rewatch them frequently. However, I sold my Dark Angel dvds on ebay a year or so ago because I was pretty sure I'd not be wanting to revisit them after the two or three viewings I gave them.

Honestly, I had a few problems with season one, and some BIG ones with season two, but the structure of the stories, the love dynamic, one of the best big bads ever (Lydecker), and the overall production values drew me in to the point where the good not only outweighs the bad, it blinds me to it.
Your mileage obviously varied quite a bit from mine.

You wouldn't have a sense of humor either if twelve of your planets got blown up.

It's about as "human" as you can get, given the dyer situations.
Chrisisall,
You know, I expected more from you.
