Hancock...what was that? (spoilers)

That movie was crazy. Was it a farce? A commentary on society? An unrequited love story? WTF did I just watch last night?
Did I see what I thought I saw? A guy's head up another guy's butt???? The movie had moments, but I'll be damned if I can figure out who I'd recommend it to...maybe early teens-?
Anyone have a coherent though about this flick?

"Coherent" is the operative word here. I had no idea what to think of the movie but I liked it, especially the first half. But you're right, it's hard to know how to classify it.

I almost rented Hancock, but then I saw Hellboy II: The Golden Army right next to it. I went for Hellboy.
One word: WOW. I was completely blown away. I remember the Iron Man thread, where it was suggested that Iron Man was the movie CGI was invented for. I'd say Hellboy II goes 'em a bit further. Simply AMAZING effects, astonishing "monsters", and really good writing. Good action, martial arts, great storytelling...
Did I mention I was blown away by this movie?
I love the way the good guys aren't all that good, and the bad guys aren't all bad. The villains are fighting the right war the wrong way, and you DO feel a bit sorry for them at times.
And I love the whole FEEL of the movie. I take it this is "steampunk" of some sort? I read William Gibson & Bruce Sterling's The Difference Engine, but after Gibson's Neuromancer, it just left me cold. Guillermo Del Torro may be just what that genre needs to make it sing.
And yeah, I was blown away. Pan's Labyrinth amazed me. The first Hellboy movie amused me. But this one... well, I'll say it again, in one word: WOW.

I liked Hancock. One of the reasons I did was because it isn't so easily classifiable. Most "super-hero" stories fall into the generic origin category, with part 2 being about the hero wanting to give up the life/power/ect. I appreciated that it took a different approach, and tried to forge some new ground. It wasn't great, but I liked it.
I would be very curiouse to see the earlier version - the original script "Tonight He Comes" was regarded as one of the best unmade scripts in Hollywood for years. It was rewritten quite a bit for filming, and then the film supposedly underwent some massive changes in editing, after the studio deemed it too edgy and mature for a Will Smith superhero flick.

I saw the unrated, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about, from what I've heard, a version that is fairly different tonally and to a lesser degree in plot, not just one with an extra scene to help market it.
