working on a fanfic which requires a return to Kaylee's home planet, the one where they picked her up and dumped Bester. Has the name of the place ever been established?

I don't think the name has ever been officially established. Over at www.stillflying, we called it "Guonian," which is a variation on a Mandarin greeting.

Did you see that post about the new map of the verse? That might be in there.

That would be pretty awesome, but I don't want to get my hopes up! :)

IIRC, Zoe was born in space, and Wash was from that planet with constant smog cover (could not see the stars).
Hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

Answer: No.

All we know about that place is that it was "on the way to Panquin" which was where Mal's next job was before the engine quit.

I can say that previous cannon, (don't remember where) establishes that Kaylee is a native rim worlder, which is why Mal treats her with affection (like he would a younger sister or daughter). Her background is of a lower-class frontier planet or moon and it shows in her ability to find beauty in "simple" things...such as her opinions of the "fancy" stuff in the general store in the episode Safe or in her unawareness that a store bought dress in Shindig would be looked down upon.

If I were you, I'd focus on the new Map generated of the 'verse and pick a backwater moon in the same sub-system as Panquin. You'll also be taking the chance that Joss and Company will later establish a loction that might toss your fiction into a tizzy, but thats unavoidable.

Don't need a name for the planet. Since it was never mentioned by name in the series, you could follow suit and just not call it by any name, but do as they did by implying which world it is.

(a.k.a. wydraz)

Not a planet, but apparently her birthplace was Kowlonshi, as listed in the Serenity bluray DVD Alliance Database.
