Do we have a FF timeline?

Hey--does anyone have a good sense of the timeline of events prior to the start of the series? I mean, we know that the Battle of Serenity Valley happens six years prior to the events of "Serenity." We also know that eleven years before "Safe" the war was under way, as the young Simon and River are playing at being Alliance soldiers against the Independents in the opening scene. So when did the war begin? How long did it last? When did Mal join up?
