Just curious.

I'm no expert, but I could go with this:

"Democrat Barack Obama placed four conditions Tuesday on his support for the Bush administration's unprecedented $700 billion bailout for U.S. financial institutions, demanding that any plan include help for Americans facing home mortgage foreclosures.

At a news conference, the presidential candidate also declared top management of failing financial institutions would have to pay a price for their poor leadership, American taxpayers must be rewarded for financing the bailout and the government program must have independent oversight."

The mess - do you mean the mortgage thing, the entire US 'rich people first' economy, its falling status and power in the world, the diminishing freedoms, or its lead in the run to be first over the environmental cliff ?

I would marry a Mafia beer heiress. Then buy, uh, seven houses, more or less.

I think at this point we are pretty screwed. As much as it kills me, I do believe now that we may have to let the Bush tax cuts sunset. The only way we'll get out of this mess and the looming social security crises is to grow out of them. That means tax cuts that specifically target economic growth. We need to eliminate the capital gains tax and lower the corporate tax. I know you don't like to hear that, but if we can't get this economy back to significant GDP growth soon, we will be in deep crap. We have put ourselves in a position where we're not really sure where the investment capital for future economic growth is going to come from, and the only way to get people to invest is to make it so they don't have to worry about the taxes on investments costing them more than the return on their investment. We are at a point where the temptation of politicians will be to pass FDR style programs to "help" the poor, if they do, the current downturn will be greatly extended just like FDR's programs extended the depression.

I wouldn't opt for a bailout, I know that much. It's a short term fix that will have long term repercussions. I say we climb out of this slow and hard.

You can survive without gov't help.

I think the people behind the companies and business practices should be held accountable in some fashion. I don't know law so pardon the naivety, can they be held responsible? They knew it was risky bad business. I've been reading about the coming crisis for a couple years now, so they must've known what they were doing.

Paulson should not have a hand in saving his own ass. Am I wrong in thinking he contributed or at least condoned this mess?
