John Barrowman, the star of "Torchwood," was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming feature film.
He smiled and gave the stock answer that he'd love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. Clearly, though, the notion did not take him by surprise and he ended up admitting there had been discussions with his agents and meetings on that very issue.
What do you think? Though maybe not the star-power that the studio might be looking for, Barrowman certainly fits the bill. We'll bring you more news as it develops.
The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.
For those who don't know, John Barrowman is openly gay...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Absolutely. I mean, superheroes have to be a bit camp to carry off the whole cape and tights thing.
What the world should be concerned with is:
Is Captain America British (or Scottish)?

October 12th, 1985. Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown.

Scottish. But he was raised in the US. Aurora Illinois if wikipedia recalls correctly.

Does it matter that I don't care if Captain America is gay or not? Gay characters have become so common place that it doesn't even shock me anymore.

I'm not very well-informed about Captain America's back story, but wasn't he originally a soldier? Back in the 1940's or something, when they injected him with some kind of serum. What was the US Army's policy on gays back then?
While I don't care if he's gay or not, one shouldn't rewrite every story one gets one's hands on with the politically-correct flavour of the day.
