I've been waiting for nearly twenty years now for a film adaptation of any of Moore's work that didn't suck. So far, the only one that qualifies is an episode of "Justice League Unlimited" that adapted Moore & Gibbon's Superman story "For The Man Who Has Everything". It's noteworthy that Moore let his name appear in the credits of that one...

"V for Vendetta" almost didn't quite suck--the "letter from Valerie" sequence came close to redeeming it--but the way it altered Moore's intricate plot nearly beyond recognition cost it my allegiance. Hugo Weaving deserves credit for an excellent performance, but Moore's "V" was not a romantic hero -- he was, in fact, very close to inhuman, and arguably not a hero at all.

I will say, that so far, the Watchmen movie looks as if to give Moore's plot and characterizations proper respect. I'm not worried about details like changes in costuming -- the Graphic Novel designed costumes to reflect then-current comic-book superheroic conventions and cliches; the film looks to pay homage to now-current film and television superheroic cliches.

But I fear that, even with a two-hour-plus movie, there just won't be time to tell enough of the story on screen. I've always felt that the only way you could properly adapt a Moore-plotted graphic novel would be with a minimum five-hours-before commercials television miniseries.

Still, hope springs eternal. Perhaps Watchmen will be the breakthrough Moore's work deserves.

Wow. A Watchmen/Gaiman duel thread. Quite possibly the greatest thread theme combo on fireflyfans.com

I saw the Watchmen trailer Friday night at Dark Knight. There I was with 3 other comic freak friends when it came up on the screen. The moment the Comedian was tossed out the glass I actually stood and cheered out loud, more than likely scaring "normal" moviegoers. I'd say that the 4 of us made more cheering noise than has ever been heard in a preview. And there were at least a few others who understood because as their voices sounded out from high up behind us. I could only imagine what was going through the minds of everyone else who "just didn't get it" but could see that some people in the theater were having the time of their lives.

I'm excited....and so very afraid too. Making this movie is serious business on the highest order. This isn't some stupid comic book movie to be screwed up like Catwoman or Punisher. This is WATCHMEN, the Opus of Comics. This is Citizen Kane.

There is nothing in the trailer that seems out-of-canon, but who knows what will end up on the screen. The fact that the Director of 300 has control gives me a little hope.

Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.
