I have long enjoyed the movie serenity and I'm saddend to say that I never knew about the show when it was on the air. I just finished watching the series on DVD and it left me with more questions that answers. In the movie at the beginning it shows River being rescued by her brother. What I want to know is was she captured some how between the show and the movie or was the easiest way for new commers to understand waht was going on. If she was captured then how? Also what was Book really the reason I ask this is because in the last epsoide "Objects In Space" when the doctor asked the bounty hunter if he felt good beeting up a shepard and he replied he's not a sheppard that left a huge question in my mind. If anyone can let me know I would greatly apprecite it.

Serenity the movie - (know here as the Big Damn Movie or BDM) is set after the series of Firefly by a minimum period of 8 months.

BUT - the beginning of the movie is a flashback to before the show! confusing?? l'il bit:)

the gap between the series and the film is filled by the official comics ( www.darkhorse.com) and by the wonders of fan fiction (check out the Blue Sun Room here).

As for Shepherd Book - oh, the debate rages on! If you dig into some of the forum strings here you'll find plenty of possible answers - but for now Joss is keeping the truth to himself...

the chronology is confusing:
River was enrolled in the Academy by her parents
her brother discusses having people break her out (after he learned that she was in danger) in the pilot episode of 'Firefly'... that is how she got into the box - as part of the escape.

In the movie we get to see that Simon was really being modest, he was very actively involved in saving his sister: the guys he hired were the ones who lifted both of them to safety and then he (probably, I'm assuming here) probably put her into stasis in the box so that he wouldn't have to worry about her mental and physical condition while he tried to find somewhere safe to take her.
We know, of course, from the TV show they ended up on Serenity...

So the whole beginning of the movie was a fractured back story giving some of River's history ....

none of us know that answer to that, however Joss has said that the next series of Serenity comic books will go into Book's back story, so I'll be excited to see how much we learn about him!

The escape scene in the movie is the original escape that brought Simon and River onboard the Serenity in the first episode of the TV series. It is a flashback for those who have not seen the TV series.

Just as those who have posted before me, Book is a big question mark. In one of the episodes Book mentions to Mal that he was not always a Shepard. What he was before is kept secret forever I am afraid to say. But Book did become a Shepard. In the first episode you see his confession to Inara, which he would only do if he were a true Shepard. Fortunately he did not throw away his identification card. They are handy at times.

So please join in. If you have searched through the fansite then you know we discuss about any topic.

Joey, if your answer has not been answered adequately, regarding River's escape:
The opening of the BDM (Big Damn Movie) shows the security record of the escape, which occurred 8 months before the Operative is now reviewing the record. This playback is also where the Operative learns of Dr. Mathias exposing Key Members Of Parliament to a Psychic (River), so the Dr. is terminated.
This escape on Osiris precedes by a few days the opening day of the Pilot Serenity, where River-in-the-box is unveiled.
The series spans about 7 months, and in Serenity mentions the Tams have been on board over 8 months - so this is 8 months after the escape scene viewed on the security recording.

I randomly picked up Serenity at the PX one evening and was blown away. Then, I find that there was a series. How did I miss this? I found a good torrent (piracy, yes, but its only fitting) and I'm about halfway through the season. I don't even have the words to describe... its absolutely amazing. I'm glad I found this site.

My kids are great at spreading the word! My son just got back from scout camp and got a fellow scout interested in Firefly! Woot! And my 8 year old daughter always wants to watch 'Jaynestown', if I let her she would watch it 5 times or more in a row.

I have been absent for a while, so a big HI to all the new browncoats I have not had the pleasure to meet.

BTW, if you are looking for an addicting, easy web based game, try Star Pirates! There are lots of Firefly/Serenity fans there, and we even have 2 fleets, Browncoats and Serenity.

Isn´t this amazing, after all those years there are still new people showing up and falling in love with FIREFLY.

With Joss latest project www.Drhorrible.com it proves that once more fans are teaming around the globe up to prove their point, if you stand together and unite nothing in the verse can stop us.

I think all major networks are allerted - this is what the future holds - a future where we don´t need them anymore.
