Actually it is a gaffe--yours. Not that you care, but Barack Obama NEVER SAID THAT. It's an urban legend. The quote was originally, and just as falsely, attributed to John McCain. Just because it shows up on some blog or other, doesn't make it true.

Also, as for that quote...anyone can see it's just a sarcastic shot at Obama. Of course he never made that exact statment...not together at least. But he has said both parts, and when you put them together you get a funny. No big thing; the attacks that will be coming out when the campaigns hit full swing in August-Oct are going to make everything to this point seem like a Ladies Auxilliary Tea Party.

It was copied in when I replied to the previous post.
I didn't use the quote on my own.
I just answered HK because he associated it with me.

Thanks for responding to this nonsense, HKCavalier. I want to point out to everyone who cares that the quote attributed to Obama actually goes:

"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world.
I hope you’ll join with me as we try to change it."

Still open to misinterpretation (for those who like to do so), but far less of a gaffe than the (mis)quote arclight gave.

Having said that, it's very doubtful that it came from Obama. I haven't seen or read anything about where and when Obama was supposed to have made this statement, all I've seen is people say something along the lines of "It's been said that Obama made that statement in a recent speech". That's not evidence, it's hearsay.

Arclight, if he said it, then link the transcript, or if there is none, then date, time and place please.

Secondly, while I've definitely not heard every speech Obama has made (so maybe this is just ignorance on my part), I don't recall him ever starting a sentence with "My friends". I do, however, recall McCain starting every other sentence with "My friends".

Another thing, arclight, what's the deal with "OREOBAMA"? You're moaning about him being black on the outside, white on the inside? Well, leaving aside the fact that he's half white, half black, and was raised by his white mother and white grandparents, what black stereotype do you think he should adhere to? Should he go around talking like Bill Cosby? Or Fat Albert ("Hey hey hey, it's time for change!")? Or should he have punched Hillary in the face and run off with her purse at one of the debates?

Implying Obama's an Oreo is bemoaning the fact that he isn't "more black", because if he were "more black", then the right wing smear campaign could bitch about him being "too black".

Saying that he said "We live in the greatest country on earth" at one time, and "we can change that" (referring to something else completely) at another time, and then putting them together, completely out of context, and attributing it to a quote by Obama and getting "a funny" is what I was responding to.

There's some truth to this. Obama's been moving towards the centre recently, something he obviously has to do otherwise he wouldn't have a chance to get elected, and there are indeed some people on the far left who feel "betrayed". I really wonder what those people were expecting, there's no way somebody like Obama could get elected in right-of-centre America without making some concessions.
