Firefly lead Nathan Fillion was recently featured in his hometown newspaper, The Edmonton Journal. Apparently landing the lead in Joss Whedon's new science fiction series is big news for the folks back home in Mill Woods, located in southeast Edmonton.
Described as being every mother's dream with his politeness and devotion to family, the 31 years old plays Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds--a captain on the losing side of a great galactic war for independence 800 years in the future--who along with his ragtag crew on the Firefly class starship, Serenity, are trying to survive under the rule of the new government.
To prepare for the role, Fillion rented two videos that Whedon had used as inspiration for Firefly: The Searchers staring John Wayne and Ulzana's Raid with Burt Lancaster.
"He was bitter coming out," said Fillion, "he lost more than the war. He lost a sense of compassion and forgiveness. He lost his faith in God. He won't kill anyone unless he has to. Nice guys can only get so mad," explained Fillion. "But when you're hollowed out inside you can get pretty mad."
Firefly staring Nathan Fillion premiers in late September on FOX this Fall.
