If Speed Racer and Dragonball Z weren't enough, now they appear to be remaking Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Akira, and Ghost In The Shell. I haven't seen Avatar, and only a little of Ghost In The Shell, but I take particular umbrage with Akira. There's no way they're going to be able to do that properly as a live action film. I pray for the days when all of Hollywood learns to create original material again.

Yeppers. But unfortunately, great films like that are few and far between. It's not that I haven't enjoyed some of the comic remakes, but getting lost in an entirely new story would be nice too.

Hollywood particles and original material particles have opposite charges and tend not to combine easily. When they do though, a lot of energy is released.

Yeah, I've known about these for a while now. Leo Dicaprio's company is producing the Akira remake and it's gonna take place in "New Manhattan". *Shudder*

The GitS film, I'm kinda lookin forward to. Steven Spielberg is working on that one, so it might be good.

I heard about Avatar last year around the time James Cameron announced the live-action Battle Angel Alita movie.

But, with all the comic book remakes lately, I knew it would only be a matter of time before they expanded into anime and manga.

As much as I would like to bash Hollywood there is still a stigma about cartoons throughout much of society. Fans of anime may regard the genre as an art form but the general public still holds the mentality that cartoons are for children. Therefore the Hollywood types pick the more popular storylines from the genre and turn them into CGI actionfests. If they do a decent job then the films can reach a much broader audience.

Singate hits the nail on the head. For those of us deeply invested in graphics and anime, we shudder at the BS we see on screen when our faves are adapted.

When I first heard that Neil Gaiman's Sandman was going to become a film I was saddened to an extreme that it felt as if a part of me had been removed. Sandman is too beautiful, too wonderous, to powerful to be allowed to fall into the hands of a Hollywood studio. When I later read that the project was being placed on hiatus I rejoiced. It should not be tainted.

When I was a boy, the public perception of comics was that it was material strictly for children. It is true to say that Superman had already been made into a film, and I maintain that "Superman The Movie" was a vital first step in steering the ship of public opinion. Superman was an iconic character who had settled upon the american dream in a manner similar to Elvis and lady liberty. Making that movie in the 70's said to the people: "see..this genera is relevant to you"

With time, more films came along like Batman in 1989 and the subsequent boom of comic book movies in the late 90's but I think Singate remains correct that there remains a greater than 50% slice of the public that continues to think that this is all just kids stuff.

What it is going to take is the continued maturity of my generation (Gen X) and the Gen Y kids behind me who will push their opinions and desires into hollywood. I think we're at a crux, a time when the opinions of Gen X are loud enough to be heard by studios, but there yet remain Execs from the baby boomer generation who see everything through the lens of the 80's situation comedy and have no appreciation or connection to anime/comics. Add 15 years to the equation and you will find boomers at home collecting social security checks while my generation mans the reins of the american media concern. Things are going to change drastically, and only for the good.

And let me add a final unrelated item: New Manhattan? WTF?

If you were born before like, 1940, or after 1990, chances are you think cartoons & superheroes are just silly stuff for kids...the rest of us know the truth.

To me, the biggest problem is that mainstream Hollywood doesn't look at things through the eyes of a fan. I think for the most part, they either see a story that seems to be popular with the general public, or dollar signs. Or often both. Maybe some eventually develop an understanding of the material and its importance, and that's great, but for many it's just the next big summer blockbuster.

And if they ever remake Full Metal Alchemist, I'm thinkings full-scale anarchy and revolt.

Really, none of those above are "re-makes", since these new projects are in a new medium. They'd be "adaptations".

Akira would be the closest to a remake, but they're not basing it on the Anime movie, but basing it on the Manga books and doing it as 2 films. The guy directing it (who's name escapes me), did an Oscar nominated short a few years back, that was quite visually interesting, and created a very effective dystopian cityscape with very little.
