I've talked to real hard-core leftists that make a good case for the media being the lap dog of the conservatives, I've talked to hard-core conservatives that point out real liberal components and bias in the media...
(Sidebar: I grew up with a severely knee-jerk Conservative father, so of course I had to be severely knee-jerk liberal to counter him- yet I loved Dirty Harry movies...
)
I come away feeling more Libertarian with each extreme discussion.
I do what I did with the margarine thing, as when I was 12 in the seventies...
"Gee, Dad, if butter has been in our diet for a really long time, and margarine has just been invented in a lab in 1940, how can you trust that it's so good for you, no matter what they say?"
I use intuitive common sense. Shortest point between two objects is a straight line. Looks like a duck, walks like a duck, etc.
And it's BY NO MEANS infallible, but it has seemed to serve me well overall.*

Some days I'm right glad to be an Anarchist, it means not having any position that you *must* defend beyond "keep yer grubby hands offa my life!", which is a personal, rather than political, one.
Beyond that there's no incentive nor requirement to take, hold, defend, or even stick with a position on anything at all, it even comes with the freedom to change your mind on any political topic at your own judgement if the evidence and situation seem to merit it in your own sole opinion.
And other Anarchists could care less, long as you don't push it on them.
It's quite liberating, honestly.
