Custom made browncoats!

Hey all,

(Geez, I haven't been here in so long my login had expired. Man, my job has been keeping me too busy. )

So for the longest time, my friend has been wanting a Mal coat. He couldn't afford the licensed leather version, of course, so my wife said she would try and make one for him. She searched and searched and of course couldn't find an accurate pattern, so she ended up making her own pattern, and through trial and error she was able to deliver his Browncoat to him for his birthday this week.

On the day that she finished it, we found Space City Costumes' coat and she joked that if she had known about that, she would have just told him to buy it there. It's amazing, really. It looks like they came up with the same pattern independently. The fabric looks identical (faux suede - hers is Alova Suede, machine washable!) and the color matches. The only difference is in the buckles. She went with a simpler D-ring method, which can be removed w/o much work if you can find more authentic Mal buckles, like the ones Tristan sells!

The pics below don't do the coat justice. Our friend received a number of compliments in the bookstore on his birthday.

Both he and I are sure she could sell these to enthusiastic Browncoats, but she isn't sure. She said she would need to sell them for ~$150 to cover her expenses and time. We pointed out that they were charging $65 more for the same thing and seemed to be in business.

This version was w/o a flash. To get a better idea of the color, look at the Space City coat. It really is close to Mal's mahogany color.

Here you can see the D-ring buckles. Open and close w/ velcro. Makes a nice look.

The collar and lapels have beautiful top stitching that doesn't come through here.

She plans to make the cuffs longer next time

She also made me a version from a darker brown, without the vinyl cuffs, 'cause I wanted a more original character. She said she could sell that one for ~$125. She can also get a lighter brown fabric, closer to what Zoe's coat it. And she can make the coat longer than the just-below-knee length that Mal's is if you want more of a trench coat/traditional duster look.

If you can afford Tristan's leather coat, that it a totally awesome coat! But if it's not in your budget, maybe one of these will work. And for just a little more, you can add his buckles.

Absolutely awesome! I am SOOO totally interested! I don't have the coin for even this one right now, but keep 'em going! I think that is an absolutely fair price for such a shiny coat! I'll let you know when I get the funds for one *totally excited*!!!
