It got cancled because Fox did a hack job of the story line. The episode that Joss and Tim wanted to be played first, which was 2 hours long to introduce the characters and the story since it was so different from anything else on tv, Fox desided that they wanted a different pilot becasue the first one wasnt fast paced enough for those assholes.
Also Fox kept changing what time Firefly was on because of other things like baseball and whatnot. All of these things made it difficult for people to follow the storyline and thats what hurt the ratings, not because the story wasnt a good one because we all know that it is.
