I have read a number of stories where Inara got preggers early on in her companion career. Here's my Q: in a society that holds their space hookers in high reviere, wouldn't they have some sure fire way not to get pregnant? Inara has to do a yearly checkup, guild law and all that, there has to be an IUD or something included in that, right?

I'm thinking it's maybe an injection like Depo Provera, but lasting a year. Depo lasts 3 months but can have some side effects like migraines and weight gain.

I imagine that in 500 years birth control is foolproof and lasts as long as you don't want to have kids. This is one reason I don't like "Oops, we're pregnant" scenarios in fics. With all the medical advances in the 'Verse, foolproof birth control just seems pretty basic for everyone (except those way out on the Rim).

I agree - I'm sure birth control is well beyond advanced that far in the future, and I too have trouble with all these accidental pregnancies.

I do too. In my mind Inara was caught up in some sort of scandal. I do think she was an innocent party though but had to leave Shinon for her own safety.

In fact, I think the House Priestess knew that a House was going to be put on a Border moon soon and decided that after she got some experience out on the Border and Rim, Inara's experiences would be an asset to the new House.

Everybody.

Oops, sorry.. wrong thread.

I've been reading the "worst ever" list. It's quite amusing and apparently I really need to have my fingers broken and be painfully strung up by my (insert private and unmentionable/reproductive body parts here) until I promise never to write again.

Depo is good for 12 weeks with a week after that for wiggle room. Never heard of migraines due to it. Weight gain *should* not be that bad unless you are unable to put down the twinkies. Hair loss is less frequent. Biggest complaint we get at work is the "irregular irregularites" with themenses. Some people stop altogether (most are quite happy with this), others get here there everywhere unpredictable periods, others just spot every day.

No one. I think it could be a political scandal or another Companion jealous enough to attempt murder.

Stinkingrose, With me I guess it's just that my migraines are hormonal and as the shot wore off it triggered one occasionally.

I didn't gain that much weight either, just 5-10 lbs but this when my daughter was going thorugh being diagnosed with ADHD and I was very stressed so it may have been the twinkies!
