Um, if that's because you used 6 terminals 2 hours apart, all 12 votes will be discarded if they are on the same subnet. You would have been better off just voting on one of them.

Well, I used 12 computers in a span of about 10 minutes. I don't know about subnets but after I voted each time the site said, "Thank You for Voting" not "We're Sorry!" so I'm assuming they went through.

Yes, the votes went through, but were likely tossed out during the verification/tally phase.
There is a very high probability that these computers were all on the same subnet. The building has ONE connection to the internet. The connection (modified phone line, cable, or sattelite) is attached to a router. All data flow to/from the building passes through the router. All of the computers attached to the same router are given different IP addresses (uuu.vvv.xxx.yyy) that differ only in the last 3 (yyy) digits; the xxx digits are the subnet. If they (xxx digits) are the same on each computer attached to a router, then the computers share the same subnet (usually. I'm sure there are exceptions, but you aren't one of them)).
Quote:

[bold] I tried at a public library once and they were clearing sharing the same internet connection (if thats what a subnet is) and only the first one went through, the second time it said that I'd already voted that hour.

I'm not sure how that one was set up, but perhaps those computers were sharing the same connection via a modem instead of a router.

However, I was at the big university library so I'm thinking that each computer had its own connection.

Probably not

Although, heres another question: If I lose track of time here at home and vote a few minutes early and get the "we're sorry" screen and then go back in a few minutes and try again, getting the "thankyou" screen this time, the site doesn't throw out all of my votes for the day on the assumption of cheating right? If I get the "thankyou" screen I assume it went through, but a couple times I've gotten the impression otherwise from the way people talk.

Can anyone clarify on these points? I know you lurk here rich!!
-e

Good question. I'm pretty sure those votes go through, but I don't really know. Perhaps try voting early (repeatedly) for a show that's low on the nominations list and see if your votes count. That's how I usually check to make sure my votes are counting.

Flattop hit the nail on the head; you can read it in Rich's words if you like...

A few details; if you vote on two or more computers and get the 'you already voted', in all -likely- hood, those computers share the -exact- same 'internet' address via a process known as NAT. Since it is trivial for Rich to detect this, he does the courtesy of letting you know right up front the vote didn't go thru. HOWEVER, in this case, the attempted ballot is simply discarded; the previous ballot is left alone, and the next one which is cast after 60 minutes will be counted (even if you tried 'a few times' because you lost track of time).

Subnet is a bit different. Say the library 'owns' the subnet 100.10.10.0-255 (none will, and I know this; I picked it to avoid confusion with any actually assigned subnet), then one system might have 100.10.10.3 while the one next to it is likely to be 100.10.10.4. Rich had problems with folks popping from one computer to the next, so added a 'post process' to the tallies to toss out votes coming from the same subnet; and in this case, they -all- get tossed out, there is no attempt to winnow out 'valid' ones separated by 60 minutes.

Anyway, a bit more detail than Rich provided, but is consistent with what Rich posted.

The TV Vote site only gets about 3,000 unique visitors a month, so a small number of people are making a big difference. Probably only a few hundred diligent Browncoats are responsible for getting Firefly into first place. That said, none of the other shows are generating a larger effort.

i aint slowing my vote - don't get me wrong
but i won't haemorrage if we drop a week here or there on the long road of domination!

Oh, I ain't slowin' down neither. I think, per capita, we are the strongest voters in this race. That's what makes us mighty.
