why?
i never use it - what is it for? - what is meant to serve as a guide to - comments are really useful, morale boosting or ego shredding or just play fun!
the last time i saw my bed it pretended not to know me. it's a thing. a trial seperation. we have issues. musical differences.

I guess you could say it's a morale-booster, or at least a general guage as to your fic's quality. Though I've found that some folk rate high or low based on whether or not they agree with the ideas you've put forward, not just the quality of the writing. Grammar and spelling definitely have had an impact on the ratings, those commenting politely (or not so much) requesting that the writer find themselves a beta reader.
If you love the fic, shoot high. If it's so-so, rate medium. If it belongs in an open airlock while breaking atmo, aim low. That's about it.
