Morning browncoats
Ok there’s been some speculation about a Sequel to Serenity sometime in the future. Right now that’s all it pretty much is. Just some background on my thinking. I’m a big Tomb Raider fan. Been one since playing the games with my kids when they were younger. Anyway when I first heard that there was going to be a movie made about TR staring Angelina Jolie I thought “WORNG”. She is not Lara Croft. She was a big star and all but she wasn’t TR to me. Anyhow the movie was made and it was successful enough for a sequel. So the point of my post is. If a BDS were to take place would a big named star be the secret ingredient to help it become a block-buster? I mean we do want Serenity to fly again, and fly often don’t we?
Here are some choices that I think could help out. Now this isn’t saying that our BDH aren’t stars themselves. Don’t misread. Just adding another star to the mix. Another BDH or BDV (villain) that can be killed off at the end.
1) Denzel Washington
2) John Travolta
3) Will Smith
4) Hugh Jackman
All these fellows have done Si/Fi before so we know they are up to it. Only thing is would they do it for us? Are they browncoats? Would they be willing to work for scale? Course I don’t mean to leave out the ladies. These are just some that I’ve listed. Anyone want to add to the list?

Most of those actors are just way too expensive, they will blow the budget before the mode is even made.
If we need to cast any actor I think we should go for the less expensive ones who haven't be around for a while, Michael Keaton, Linda Fiorentino, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeff Goldblum, Gina Davis....I think the fantastic Laurence Fishburne might also do some work for a reasonable fee because he loves the Zoe character so much.

But they aren't, not in the sense you're using. You're talking about an actor that can pull a large number of people into the theater just because he/she is in the film. And let's face it: our BDHs ain't that.

The studio thought that with the first one. They wanted a big star to play the Operative. Not a 10 million guy, but someone who would draw people. Joss talks about it in the commentary. Chewitel was the name on every casting director's lips, but he tried to find someone who would be more marketable.
None fit.
Chewitel did.
And he was considered to be a rising star, at least in Europe, so they got away with it, but barely.

Great feedback!
Jayneztown: Blowing the budget right off the bat with a big name star I don’t think the movie companies are worried about. I thought the same thing with Angelina Jolie. But her star power was enough to recoup her cost and then some. So it was the right move for the studio in my way of thinking though it wasn’t at the time. She also got her Dad, Jon Voight to play her dad Lord Croft in the first TR. Laurence Fishburne! Excellent choice! Who better than family to work for peanuts on a project of love. Gina could sweet talk me into anything. By the by they could even request Mr. Fishburne’s buddy from the Matrix Keanu Reeves to play the part of Simon and Rivers long lost brother…..NOT!! Sorry lost my head for a second.
Casual: That’s right! I do believe that folk who went to see TR went there to see Miss Jolie. Not because they loved and enjoyed the game. Correct-a-mundo.
Miss Rose: You are a wealth of information. I certainly did not know that and I’ve seen the commentary several times. Guess I was having one of my black-out moments or maybe just taking a bathroom break. Anyway thanks for telling me because I did not remember. Chewitel did an excellent job as the operative and just as I can’t think of anyone else playing Serenity’s crew I can think of no other than him playing the operative.
I have enjoyed your posts Fellow Browncoats and part of the fun of getting answers is a lot of the time they lead to other questions and ideas.

Heh, actually I might have my sources mixed up. It's the interview in the Visual Companion that talks about casting the Operative; might not be in the commentary at all. But anyway, there it is in black and white. Now I have to watch the commentary again to make sure I can keep where I get my info all straight

I sometimes amuse myself imagining Jodie Foster as the Operative. "Well, Operative - have the Reavers stopped screaming?"

A sequel would have to have at least one recognizable star, mabye the Operative should be back in it since the guy who played him is a lot more famous now

I think we sould look at well know stars that still have a tendancy to do samller movies because they thing they're good. Not indie films, just slightly smaller ones.
And since you mentioned TR, Gerry Butler is pretty big just now. What about him. I think he'd make a wonderful terrifying villian. Or possible a ruthless rival that is still sorta kinda a friend of the BDHs

This kinda raises another problem. If we get a sequel what's the acronym? BDS is already taken: Big Damn Series!
