I'm sure someone has answered this before.
I can account for every image that comes out in the opening credits of firefly. except for the horses running in the end. where is that from? its not taken from any scene, i take it.
just wondering.

You're right, it isnt from the show itself. I think it is something that Joss just wanted to be in the credits.

Yeah, the image is just there to visually represent what the show will be, which is a mix of the past and future fusing together.

That being said, I'm probably one of the few people that don't really like the opening credits. It just seems to hokey and jumbled, in my opinion.

I also think the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA credits are only slightly better. Like it begins very slow and contemplative as we see the destruction of Caprica, the convoy and the # of survivors (which I like the fact that it keeps updating), and then it picks up with the drums and the flashes of the upcoming episode. It works, but I just feel it's like two separate openings put together.

But my personal all time favorite opening credits is for the new DOCTOR WHO. You have that "Pppppeeeeeooooooo" and then you're being hurtled along with the TARDIS down a wormhole going at breakneck speed before just stopping in mid-space, a wuick wraparound and then being hurtled again through another wormhole. And all the while, you're listening to what is arguably the third most iconic sci-fi theme of all time that promises imagination, danger and exciting adventure. I always crack my speakers during those credits just to send shivers up myself.

The first and second being the themes to STAR WARS and STAR TREK.

That has to be my all-time favourite too. I adore it, so many good memories

I waited to see that scene of the horses while I watched the series for the first time and they never showed up. I guess it was just as has been said already that Joss wanted to get people into the feel for what he had in mind for the show.

The outer rim is a new frontier and what best points this out but a western feel with horses and Serenity soaring overhead. It is the perfect shot to express this feeling and includes Serenity as a part of this.

Serenity is to Mal and the rest of the crew as Silver is to the Lone Ranger.

Yes, I am old enough to remember the Lone Ranger.

Indeed...and I'm actually really surprised that people expected the "ship spooks the horses" shot to show up in any episode.

Shows make up shots for opening credits all the time. I didn't expect to see that shot on Firefly for the same reason I don't expect to see the four Law & Order regulars-du-jour walking down a hallway together in any particular episode.

Since I watched Firefly in first-run on Fox, most of the shots in the credits were unfamiliar because many of them are from the pilot, and I assumed that any number of them could've been made up for those credits.

If you can't get into the Western-influenced look (the sepia tone, the country music), there probably isn't anything that'll change your mind about it being "hokey"...but what makes it "jumbled?"

Well...yes. You have just enough time to start pondering the past before you're thrust into the urgent present. That seems like the current version of Battlestar Galactica in a nutshell, which is why those credits work for me.

I love the theme music to Doctor Who. Not only is it iconic (and older than the other two franchises you mentioned), but it has at times been my favourite opening music of all. It's timeless and can always be listened to on its own...which also (in a sort of ironic way) makes it the perfect music for that series.

The current opening credits are also great. As a DW fan from way back, I was already onboard for the new series, but seeing that wraparound shot of the TARDIS for the first time really sealed the deal for me.

The opening credits are really well done, and the sepia tone and song (with the accompanying action images) really set the tone for the series.

And props to the mention of the Doctor Who opening credits - huge fan here. :) My favourite Who credits from any era would be the first Tom Baker opening credits, particularly the shot of the TARDIS flying down the wormhole towards you I think is an iconic image as any you'd get throughout the original series run. Favourite version of the theme too. :D
