You are correct, Dante's inferno refers to Styx as a vast swamp which encompassed the 5th circle of Hell.
But long before Dante, let alone the advent of Chistianity, Styx was simply the river that brought you to the gates of the Underworld.
I guess this was just another example of Christianity trying to make it easier for those forced into following their beliefs by writing their gods/goddesses/beliefs into the cannon.

Well I have had a disagreement with citizen once. I could say from this disagreement that he does seem to be intelligent, knows a lot of stuff, and has a healthy diet as he doesn't eat chocolate easter eggs, but sexy no.

Even here we can find informative snippets. Though I have to agree with PR too, I think the river Styxs is mentioned in Dante's Inferno, but then the Devil was modelled on Ba'al, and Dante's Inferno isn't wildly adhered to since the lowest level of Hell is very cold, not very hot.
