An official welcome, FlatTop! Thank you for signing up!
I like the fact that you can understand most versions of spoken English! Tech support is a pain sometimes.
Thank you again for joining!

I'd mentioned higher up that I'd be marching, thought I'd do some of the 'paperwork'

Yep...as soon as I finished posting, I read up a bit...but I'll stand by the "official welcome" because you just now put down all the paperwork stuff. Yeah...that way I don't feel like a complete idiot!

I notice people are looking for jobs, so at other's recomendation, I am posting some of the structure in a Marine Corps Infantry battalion.

At the Battalion level, each S- Shop has a specific job.

S-1 is administration, personnel records, documents, promotions, pay, etc.

***I think this is an easy choice- anyone in the S-1 shop would be web-admin, roster/roll call/personnel file database maintainance. If there was a call for an administrative Officer, without worrying about how their rank would relate to the Chain of Command, this would be the place.

S-2 is intelligence, meaning foreign and domestic, location of friendly troops, enemy positions (anywhere in the world), satellite maps, weather reports, etc.

***I imagine that a 76th Infantry S-2 shop would handle location of events, fans, sci-fi cons, etc. anything that could be useful information to the group. Intel never knopws what they are going to be asked for information-wise until it gets asked for.***

S-3 is Operations, or "planning". This is the S Shop that handles everything from planning a simple rifle range on base here in California to a "Pointman" range in Australia, to the route for a Battalion 3- mile run, to a rescue mission in the Sunni Triangle.

***Event planners pretty simple, but horribly complex. they also compile the information from S-2, what the Supply Train (or "Log Train" for "Logistics") can provide for the troops involved (water, food, badges, patches, merchandise, etc? I can only imagine), S-5 Public Relations, S-6 Communications, etc.

S-4 is Logistics, or the Supply guys. They handle getting the three B's to the troops (Beans, Bullets, and Band-Aids).

***In the real world, that would be Merchandise with the 76th logo, posters, setting up and arranging for tables, water, snacks if apllicable, places at sites to lock up all of the material/merchandise. They would be responsible for their own security alongside S-3 "Operations".

S-5 is Public Relations. This includes Psychological Operations, Pre-Bombing flyer creation, etc. they also handle press releases about training, after-action reports, etc..

***This is a direct translation one. Not a lot of changes to this one.

S-6 is communications, or the Comm Shop. They handle all internet access, intranet (regarding operations/mission info and planning, messages). They also handle field radios, computer tech support and set-up.

*** Another direct translation. Possibly the guys/gals who talk to the webmaster or run it themselves.

Each shop has an Officer, senior enlisted, and a clerk.

Sometimes they get a spiff nickname. The S-3 Officer is the "Ops O", the S-4 Officer is the "Suppo", Etc.

Also, in the infantry, there are further divisions of manpower, with "billets" taking or sometimes superceding rank.
