Sci-Fi is a very small network with big parents . If you only have new Firefly content on the Sci-Fi network , then you are automatically limiting the demographic . Firefly is premium content that breaks the Sci-Fi mold and appeals to much more than just the uber-geek fanboy following . Firefly appeals to an incredible range of fans , from say , about 7-years-old up to about 77 . Plus the show attracts viewers that would not typically choose a science-fiction program . A lot of females choose to watch Firefly , but a more typical science-fiction demographic skews more heavily male .
We've got lots of options .
Fox owning the rights actually means a lot . If someone decides to make new Firefly content for television , Fox can be persuaded to cash in that chip . Perhaps with a profit-sharing arrangement whereby they don't charge the full market price for the series rights up front , but take some percentage points of the subsequent DVD sales of the series once it is re-established .
This is Hollywood we're talking about . Deals will get made , so long as there is cashy money to be had .
Since Firefly is premium content , it would be best located on a premium network with a paying subscriber base . HBO or Showtime could get it done . HBO spent around 75 million dollars to produce " From The Earth To The Moon " . Tom Hanks was behind it , because after
" Apollo 13 " , he still felt that there were lots of untold stories remaining from the Apollo missions to the moon .
Seventy-five megabucks would be more than sufficient to produce a Firefly mini-series of about 14 hours in length . Likely it could be done for substantially less , maybe even only 50 million . Only about twice the cost of the Serenity movie , but enough new Firefly for a new " episode " of the mini-series to be shown every night for a week during its premiere time .
Then , those episodes could be parsed out to be re-shown , as a weekly series of episodes to be run for 7 weeks .
Then , prior to the next season's Firefly premiere , the " mini-series " format would be run again in a marathon session , to allow folk to catch up , if they'd missed any episodes .
The advantages :
1) We get lots of fresh , new Firefly content with production values probably on par with a feature film , but we get a " seasons worth " of shows , enough to make a second Firefly boxset .
2) The network gets to sign on lots of new Browncoat subscribers .
3) Firefly develops a larger following across a broad demographic , from people who already subscribe to the premium network .
4) Firefly finally gets some well-deserved notice and wins some Emmy awards .
5) The B.D. Heroes get to film the mini-series within a timeframe of maybe 90-100 days , which still allows them plenty of time to devote to other projects .
6) The Firefly series continues year after year and gains in popularity , becoming known to a huge number of households in the United States alone .
7) The network re-sells the show to its partners in overseas markets .
8) So many new Browncoats are being made that eventual demand requires new FF/Serenity feature films be made once every 2-3 years .
There are lots of other advantages , like increased merchandising , for example , that are not even considered at the moment .
If anyone thinks of other advantages to a plan like this , feel free to add your own thoughts .

You made some really good points. The Sci-Fi channel attracts a mostly male, highly geeky audience (I suppose I more or less fit that definition). Firefly attracts that crowd (some of them anyway) plus it attracts female viewers because of its character-driven nature.
But it doesn't attract everybody. Some people don't have the patience for a show like Firefly and some sci-fi geeks probably think it strays from sci-fi orthodoxy a little too much (i.e. no aliens, etc).
Ultimately, what Firefly is is premium content on par with the Sopranos or any other HBO exclusive series. It attracts a certain kind of person and that person will go way out of his way to get that content.
Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing a Firefly show on the Sci-Fi channel...they have bucked their fanbase before by bringing on crossover shows (i.e. the new BSG) and mainstream audiences will tune in (or at least program their DVR to tune in) to the Sci-Fi channel for the crossover shows.
What I think would be best is to finish the Malcolm Reynolds story on the silver screen (that will also help bring in other fans) and to have another show set in the 'Verse (starting off with a Sci-Fi miniseries as a test balloon).
The main asset about this franchise (and there are many) is, IMO, the setting and the premise themselves. This is the FIRST PLAUSIBLE EXTRASOLAR SCI-FI setting and it could easily spawn any number of spin-offs.
