tonight the Sci-fi channel will be running the premiere AND the Christmas special,
introducing David Tennant to the USA as the 10th Doctor...

Absolute pirate that I am, I got the whole first season with David Tennant a few months ago, and I am here to tell you all, that it is absolutely great! Tennant brings a ton of boyish enthusiasm to the character, but more than that, you get some real insight into the Doctor's mind and psyche. Don't worry, I won't be putting any spoilers out here, that would surely send me to the special hell, but you will get a real good look into the infinite sadness and loneliness that is the Doctor's life, and, finally, the Doctor gets to be a man, not a celibate individual as he has been in years past. he can love, he can be hurt, and he can grow very very angry.......get ready for a hell of a good ride!

I was anxious for this season to start. There was a thread of who was your favorite Doctor. There were quite a few that listed David Tennant. I just finished the 1st episode. I can see why he has become a favorite.

I don't watch Dr Who enough to understand it...at all. So I know I should be jumped on for even asking this question, but why are there differen't Doctors again? I've tried to watch it, but everytime it comes on, it's smack dab in the middle of some story where I have no clue about what's going on, etc... I'd like to know, but there seems to be such an extensive history, I feel a bit daunted in trying to catch up here.

I had come here hoping to get an answer to why Dr Who was different than last years. But if this it the 10th one, I'm in WAY over my head!

No need to be embarrassed about asking.

As part of his physiology, the Doctor (and others of his species), can regenerate their entire bodies if it gets too damaged. So in the past, when he's suffered radiation sickness, fallen off a massive radio telescope, simply gotten too old (750 years old I think he was at the first time), he undergoes cellular regeneration.

This allows the studio to change actors without ruining the show. As for why this years is different to last years, Christopher Eccleston (Dr #9) didn't want to be typecast as the Doctor, so he departed, making way for David Tennant (current Dr)

I haven't watched Doctor Who over the years, but the come back, with Christopher Eccleston, was too exciting to ignore, and I fell in love (with the show and him)
He said, in one of the DVD extras, that he took the role because he was usually cast as a thug, and told he had no sense of comedy or charm. Obviously Doctor Who #9 was full of both and he was brilliant.

I wasn't sure I would be as attached to David Tennant's Doctor, but I've found that just like Rose, I'm making the transition without any trouble at all! Tennant is a wonderful actor and he is really giving me a sense of someone who is not yet comfortable in his skin, or sure of who he is. He has created layers for himself which are very separate from Eccleston's tortured (everyone I ever knew is dead) soul.

I think I may really like Tennant's Doctor even better!

It’s not really necessary to know anything about that previous Doctor’s to appreciate the current two. But the story, as far as I know it, is that the Doctor can regenerate 12 times, before he finally dies completely, though it’s widely doubted that such a thing will actually happen, and the story has already begun to establish loopholes.

Every new regeneration of the Doctor is accompanied by a new actor, with slightly different mannerisms, personally, accent, etc. all of which must be plausibly accounted for to make the transition meaningful to audiences.

Of all the Doctors, (that I’m familiar with) Eccleston was by far the best. He had a dark and gritty personality, sort of the Mal of the Doctor Who’s, instead of the Willy Wanka good-guy appearance. I could connect with Eccleston, because he was not infallible, not morally perfect and not without his own internal struggle between right and wrong. Tennant, as the tenth Doctor, hasn’t done much for me yet, but we’ll see.

You are in for a treat. Tennant is excellent as the 10th Doctor. The on screen chemistry between himself and Billie Piper is great. I was rewatching the last episode of season two last night, and I cannot wait for the Christmas special or the 3rd series!

Eccleston was a nice, dark gritty Doctor, but Tennant has screen presence. He plays all the ranges very well, and by the end of the season you will love him.

As Tom Baker once said about David Tennant, remarking on his role as the new Doctor: He has secrets.

I agree on the brilliance of Eccleston's angsty edgy Doctor,
but I have to say that I was caught by the weirdness of Tennant's Doctor who is not comfortable in his own skin, and needs the others to recognize him as the Doctor before he can even begin to get his own head into the game....
there is a definite 'other-worldly'/alien quality to his Doctor which I'm finding very interesting already.
I was sorry that Eccleston wanted to leave the role so quickly, but I'm glad they got another really gifted actor for the part.
