@Haken:
In light of the recent Kaneman fiasco, that apparently is the result of another user in his household hi-jacking the account, I request a logout feature.

This way, people (like the real Kaneman) can click logout and the hi-jacker won't be able to use his account anymore.

This would be trivial to implement (deleting cookies is easy) and it could be just a get var to the main page with the link to do it on the navigation bar on the main page as well (possibly beside info?).

At any rate, I really think that this feature would be appreciated by many people.

I agree. People can delete their cookies and logout, but probably don't think of that.
Does hitting "re-login" log you out if you don't log in? I'm going to check that...
*edit* no it sure doesn't. So a logout feature is a good idea!

*sheepishness* Well, I had the right idea. There's a logout link under "re-login" over on the left of the screen. Problem solved, I guess!

Didn't see that there. Thank for pointing it out

But, it is only on the login page, which doesn't exactly make sense. It should be added to the main page as well. That way, people actually might notice it.

I always logout. Just to break the link so spammers can't use me to get inside. I may be paranoid but an ounce of caution is worth a pound of cure.

But I have discovered I can return to the site and I am able to function without logging in. So now I logout twice. The system seems to have flaws in this area.

So if anyone wants to know how to logout, hit "re-login" the new window has a "logout" to the left hand side.

If it is broken (haven't tried it myself), then it should be fixed. But, don't hold your breath. I've submitted serveral bug reports in the couple years I've been here, and every single one is still an outstanding issue.

Question: After you logged out, did the main page say you are still logged in? B/c I believe one can still navigate this site without having to be logged in.

Indeed. But IMO, the logIN page is not exactly an intuitive place to put the logOUT feature.

IMO, it should be on the main page. Perhaps change:

"re-login"

To:

"re-login / logout"

Where the above is two different links. One leading to the login page, the other the logout feature.

Hello SigmaNunki:

I agree about the location. I stumbled onto it while exploring the site. My guess is most people don't logout. They do have an "Immediate Assistance Forum", but the name implies, if you need emergency help. Actually there is a lot of useful information there.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't logout. I feel this leaves doors open that should be closed. I'm not a computer administrator, but they have a logout for some reason. And it should be used by everybody.

As for the "not having to login problem" I've come across I think the problem lies with the software the forum uses. I belong to a site that allows you to delete your post if you find an error. So if you accidently create a double post, you can delete the second one and continue. Can't do that here. So we may be stuck with this system. To change any part of it may require whole new package.

Haken has had enough to do with spammers and hackers that I don't think he has the time to rebuild the site. It is so big now. I imagine it would be a major overhaul.

I give Haken credit for having such a large scale site. The other site I belong to is but a speck compared to this immense site.

Very true. There are also some very serious security concerns that I have with how Haken maintains login and authentication.

I believe this is a custom site i.e. Haken wrote it himself. He's made some comments that say as much anyway. So, fixing it shouldn't be an issue.

As for the double posts, no you can't delete them. But, you can edit the content to nothing. Which is what I see most people do when it happens.

Actually, the site isn't that big. There is posting in the discussions and posting in the blogs (which should use almost the exact same code but doesn't) which are what most people use.

Then there is the Blue Sun Room, which again, isn't that complicated.

I understand that for most, this site will look like a huge beast. But, when I start to think about the code that runs it all, it's not that complicated, nor would the code base be that large. Or at least it wouldn't be if designed properly.

As do I.

And here I go and air some grievances.

The only changes that I've seen made to the site in the over 2 years I've been here, is the creation of new Message Boards, the creation of the RWED section below "Lates Discussions" and now the "Firefly and Serenity Guerilla Marketing" section as well. All these things trivial to do.

Also, every bug report I've made has been ignored along with this feature request. I've even gone and done a search for FFFs.net, created a thread for it, sent a msg to him. I've got no reply on any of these issues.

All this even though people have been asking for several features over the years e.g. Since I've been here, paging has been wanted but never done. Not only would this make long threads viewable for dial-up users, it also saves a tonne of bandwidth making the site faster for everyone.

He has on the info page, "If you're interested in becoming a part of our team. Let me know." Clearly this isn't the case, at least not anymore.

Given the above, I think that I'm justified in openly criticizing his neglect with regards to maintaining the site. I mean, the only time he's taken action is when the site completely broke a few months ago to restore it (from months old backups b/c those aren't done properly either).

At any rate, I'm going to take a deep breath, watch some tv and have some wine. Hopefully, Haken will prove me wrong.
