yes, been there too. Know how it feels to be mean and push people away, know how it feels to be around people who can't stop their meanness.
I appreciate and share your feelings. I have written River long mails telling her my story in hopes that it would help her find her way, and to see her getting worse is hard.
I just don't see cruelty as the answer. That's all. (Not talking to anyone posting here, just any lurkers who think that nasty PMs are the way) She's clearly not able to get help right now, and while we can ban her, she seems tech savvy enough to keep coming back.
I like keeping an eye out for her mean posts, to let newbies know to blow her off. Yeah - cause that would have killed me, to get a post like the ones she's left! But there's not much else we can do, like it or not. Let's stop the hate, okay? Deal with it as cool as we can, and keep it shiny.
OK, I'll stop ranting now! Thanks for being nice about it!

Still, it never pays to be too squeamish about these things. Humans would do well never to lose sight of the fact that we are only organisms, more or less like any other organism. (NB: Albeit with big brains. I think that's a good thing, but I'll have to get back to you.) If the other animals are not particularly fussy about it, I don't see why we should be.
In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say drinking from a river is probably safer for you in the long run than a diet consisting of foodstuffs bought from your local supermarket...

P.S.
On the other hand, in the short run, if you drink from a River without purifying the water first, you'll probably come down with a nasty case of incontinence. Your body just no longer has the natural defenses against such microbial critters.
Just try not to do it in the River, if you do get sick. It's creepifyin' enough in there already...
