The realization that smocking was hard hit me again right after I tangled all the threaded needles together...the christening gowns were a lot easier than this!

There is actually another technique requiring heavy thread or fishing line zig-zagged in a crosscheck pattern and then drawn together to create a diamond bunch-type pattern, but I can't remember the name of it...your idea sounds a bit easier!

I remember that one! I'll go look it up, see if any of my books have the technique in, but Serenity's idea sounds much better. Easy peasy, and no breaking threads to ruin the effect.
If you get knicker elastic (the round string stuff, not the stripp stuff) and just zig zag stich over it whilst stretching it out its even quicker.
