I don't know about the BBC, but here on this side of the pond National Public Radio will correct a factual error made by a guest (if it's considered sufficiently important or misleading).

Not currently living in the UK, but I'm noticing that even the ABC (closest equivalent in Australia) have more and more mispronunciations and totally incorrect statements in their news and other programs - and there is so much general mispronunciation words - vulnerable for instance (a favourite word for journalists) is being pronounced "vun'rable"
And has anyone heard George W. Bush attmpt to pronounce "nuclear"????

Hi Magdalene - yup there is so much mispronunciation going on up here too! On one hand I try not to let it bother me, but when I hear people in the media in particular say things incorrectly, it just irritates me.
Here there is a tendency to try and make everything into a verb. So words have "ize" stuck on the end of them : energize, prioritize etc. I can understand it in America, that's just the way the language has developed, but here it's just wrong.
With the onset of the world cup, I fear we're in for some serious language abuse. With the ubiquitous 'footy' pundit, all a lather with football jargon.....Those guys can just about speak a language.
So we'll be peppered with juicy moresels of :
"He's a great getter forward."
"Thems the ways you do it."
"He shoulda went for the ball"
and so on....
So whinge away! I'm right there with you. :D Incidently whereabouts in Australia are you? I was in Melbounre in january with my girlfriend. Absolutley loved it and the Australians!

Oh Somnambulist - you are a person after my own heart!! But in the platonic sense - please reassure your girlfriend that I mean no harm!!
I totally agree with you that it's not a huge issue with the general public - after all how can we expect them to pronounce words correctly when they are not being set a good example by the mass media - but when people are being paid to be our 'conveyers of news' they should at least attempt to pronounce things proper-like! (she said with her tongue firmly in her cheek!)
There is even an add on TV now which states that "your skin can become vu'nrable" 
Don't get me started on sports commentators!!!##!!*#%!#!! 
- there is something to be said for having a modicom of training as a journalist when it comes to talking on TV (or training as an actor in my case, she added with a hint of modesty) Unfortunately there is a trend over here (which I'm sure is not limited to us Aussies) to give anyone with a hint of good looks, a reasonable career in their sport and the ability to string 2 words together a job in commentary!! (having a good agent helps too!)

Now for the pleasantries - guess what? I do live in Melbourne!! I love my city too and am glad you were here in January, though it was pretty hot here around then! March was increadible though - we still had gorgeous weather and half the known world came to stay for the Commonwealth Games (for any US browncoats reading this - it's when every country or state ever colonised by Britain (who didn't waste good tea, and then run them out of town!
) get together and have the Olympic Games without the USA - it gives the rest of the world a chance to win something!!
Where abouts in England are you Somnambulist? Did you or your girlfriend have family here? Whereabouts in Melbourne were you staying? You'll be pleased to know that a Serenity screening on 23rd June was confirmed today!! I am so excited!!
Now go out there and complain - a lot - about those horrid BBC presenters who don't know their peas from their queues!!

My goodness I long for those old days! Here the basic criteria is:
(1)Do you mind making an arse out of yourself on TV?
(2)Will you perform a suspiciously 'sexual' looking act in front of the cameras?
(3)Do you share your I.Q. points with the neighbours cocker spaniel?
(4)When you have a tapp dancing accident is it because you fall into the sink?!
....and so on. Here half the TV fraternity seem to be semi degenerate individuals with absolutely no shame. Whom, once the limelight wanes off, flock to semi-experimental house moving shows on the lesser satellite channels!

Just missed this and the F1 race (of which I'm a huge fan) but I saw the preparations along the Yarra River :D Just loved that Yarra.

I'm from the south east, in the county of Kent. I presently reside in a sleepy little town called Tenterden. Quintessentially English.
My girlfriend is Aussie, a true Melbournite(?) of Italian descent. We were there staying with her family (my chance to know them) and they were unbelievably hospitable, as were all the Australians. I met some incredible people! We stayed around the St.Albans area and also went down to the seaside town of St. Leonards - which I loved and could easily see myself living in, should chance/fortune/work allow. Absolutely beautiful place.

I guess to the untrained observer it is easy to understand why someone would make this mistake. I mean they were both written and directed by the same guy. Someone who actually bothered to watch both shows might say: "Hey, I recognize some of these characters". There are similarities.
Wash - Xander
Kaylee - Willow
Book - Giles
Jayne - Spike
Not to mention several of the actors from Firefly have appeared on either Buffy or Angel.
I would be remiss however in not pointing out to these people that Buffy was about teenagers living in mystical world filled with magic, demons, and vampires while Firefly/Serenity was about a group of more mature folk wielding firearms while living on a spaceship in the future.
Hmmm...now that I think about it these people are pretty damn stupid and deserve no sympathy or understanding. They shall be struck down without mercy.
