iN THE MOVIE IT SAYS 2468, THE MOVIE IS SET IN 2517, THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT. CAN IT?

2517-2468 = 49. Mal would have been pushing 50 in Serenity.

2517-2486 = 31. Mal would have barely been into his 30s in Serenity.

The latter seems just the tiniest bit young for someone to have gotten a secondary education (at least), fought in a war and risen to the rank of Seargant, survived the post-surrender months, made his way through the post-war years to buy a ship and assemble a crew, and establish a reputation as a freelance import/export specialist. However, it's not impossible.

...but it does make me feel like a great big slacker...

I think we have a mistake in SERENITY! Zoe is listed as 2484, so Mal should be close, so in the scene after the bar fight when mal is on the alliance screen, it says 2468.
