Escape from New York

I know I failed with the Near Dark Thread. However you guys must like Escape from New York???. A film I have not seen for a long while. I bought it on DVD. One of my fave directors is John Carpenter and this is one of the films that sealed him as one of my fave directors. For a start Snake Plisskin aint a nice guy. He is our hero, however watch the film and you'll see he does not care about anybody except himself. He has a bit of a thing towards Maggie at the end but that soon dissapears.
I like Kurt Russel I think he is a cool actor. He is fantastic in The Thing (another John Carpenter film that you cannot deny is very good) and also Big Trouble in Little China. He is one of those actors we don't see much of but when he turns up in movies he is very good :)

I just can't get over Kurt doing all those Disney movies like the World's Smartest Man or Son of Flubber.

LMAO. you know you love son of flubber. It's a damn shame that Kurt Russel sold himself to crap films like that. He could have been a contender :)

I liked Kurt in "Soldier." That was a good flick. Thinking of Kurt in those old Disney films makes me want to ask when did Eddie Murphy become Fred McMurray?

I like almost every one of Carpenter's films. Halloween is still my favorite horror movie. There is something about the way he sets the tone in a movie through lighting and atmosphere. Not to mention the music he uses to add an extra creepy factor. Even Escape From New York, while not a horror film, does have a feeling of dread.
I do agree that Mr. Russell has traded his street cred for an easy buck making family friendly films. In addition to the great films you already mentioned let us not forget he introduced the populace to the term FUBAR in Tango and Cash.
Speaking of great lines one of my favorites is in Escape From New York. Near the end when the President gets the upper hand on Issac Hayes. "I am the Duke of New York!...I am A number 1!" Great moment in my opinion. I love his delivery of that line.

Oh, yeah, "Soldier" was the movie that made me take real notice of Kurt Russell. I mean, he had, what--two lines in the whole movie? He had to do the whole thing on facial expressions alone, and most of the time he could only show it in his eyes because his character wasn't supposed to show emotions. Just watching what he could express with his eyes alone really made me a fan. He deserves more credit.

Indeed. It's difficult to pin point it isn't it. I think it's just damn clever use of all the medium that film requires. He is basically untouchable for atmosphere.
I personally love The Fog for the very reasons you just highlighted. The first ten minutes of that film is so heavy with atmosphere that when that brick falls out of the walls of the church it freaks the bejeesus out of you! So simple yet so effective.
However for sheer brilliance of direction I'd go with THE THING it's utterly compelling and he stayed true to the narrative, and never went for the blockbuster finalé... It's a true HORROR film.

Yeh Carpenter always does his own music for his movies and he comes up with some cracking soundtracks. The Halloween soundtrack is brilliant and everybody knows it, It's as familiar to the ears as the Jaws theme music. I also love The Thing soundtrack. The begining of that film is awesome with the panoramic 'shaky cam' view of a snowy landscape and mountains. The music is a thuding deep bass synthesiser and beat as the Norwegian helicopter comes into view, shooting at the dog. Amazing film. On reflection John Carpenter is the only director that I personaly like all films he has directored. I have other favourite directors, for instance Ridley Scott but I am not a fan of all his movies.
Somn that's a great list. You need to put The Thing in there as well ;)

I liked Escape from LA better, but NY was a good flick. My favorite Kurt Russell role is still Overboard, though, 'cause I'm a Philistine.
