The betrayal which still smarts and comes first to mind was by my professor/graduate advisor. One of the guys in the lab stole my speaking position at a scientific conference and referred to me using The C Word in his lab notebook after I caught him stealing chemicals from me. My advisor let him get away with everything until I went to several people in the administration. Graduate school only sucks because there are so many a$$holes here.

Why can't I just use violence to solve my problems?

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

The scientific community is well stockpiled with dismissive arrogant jerks. I think that the lab environment attracts these sorts of people, which is why I got out of it years ago. People will steal your research, while they are smiling in your face, and people there also will stab you in the back without regret just as long as they can look good doing it.

Being betrayed in the scientific community is a given.
