Actually, there seems to be quite a bit of The Tempest in Serenity. Anonymous (216.199.4.196) wrote quite a nice "essay" on it, as commentary to a fanart piece of mine. I can, for obvious reasons, not ask for her permission. But since she posted this in the public Blue Sun room, I guess no real harm is done repeating it here. She says River shrugging off her jacket, after saying "Miranda",
"... somehow reminded me of the end of the Tempest, where Prospero puts aside his magic mantle to become a whole man again and a better father to his daughter Miranda. No longer broken and consumed with pain over the past, Propero is healed when he realizes what's real and important in life. Anyway, the author of the essay says the central theme of the play is the that the three things most valued in the world are life, liberty, and wonder. (These values shown both in their purity and in the ways they can be perverted.) And the story told in various stages of sleep and consciousness (trance, hallucination, and waking to what is real). So, I began to see all kinds of things in common with Serenity besides the name Miranda, and I had forgotten the character of Ariel (the imprisoned spirit of fire and light). Anyway, I was just wondering whether this was a favorite play of Joss Whedon."
