Here's the way I see the goings-on of this thread:
1) G-Man posts an interesting, but vague ANALOGY.
2) Some of us didn't get it.
3) G-Man's response is perceived by some, including me, to be condescending and insulting.
4) Indignant responses to said perceived insult/condescension ensued, followed by escalating volleys of condescension, spelling & grammer checks, and insults from both sides.
5) Along the way, some decided to take G-Man's analogy literally, i.e. "Joss REALLY IS trying to control our minds!", instead of: "Ha ha! Joss must be trying to control our minds ha-ha!"
6) Then more BDIs from the More-Intelligent-Than-Thou crowd decided to chime in and fan the flames of condescension.
7) Thankfully, along the way, some haven't taken any of it seriously, and delivered gems like the "imbue" response...still makes me chuckle.
Once I finally got it, I found the analogy clever and interesting(with some holes), but didn't take it literally.
My biggest problem with this thread is the attitude of those mentioned in #6 above. Folks with this mentality give sci-fi fans a bad name, period.
I rest my case.

Admittedly, those quotes do look rather condescending (when taken out of context). Some futher explanation. As to the theory itself, I could have taken it or left it... it was the smirking, impish "neener-neener you're lame because you don't get it" attitude that got to me more than anything else.

Actually, my condescension comments were aimed at the attitude you so poignantly described above, not your post. I just forgot to remove your comments from my post before I submitted it...sorry, didn't meant to quote you out of context.

But all kidding aside, I think a lot of us "got" it alright, but probably dismissed it right out of hand, thus "losing" it again, because it was simply too, well, broken. There is something called a "fog factor." William F. Buckley's writing has it bad. Those who don't get the intent of his writing generally don't jump in with both feet and openly declare their inability to grasp his intent. Instead, they ignore him. This is what could have happened here, but NO. Many apparently decided they were superior, or better posters, or better writers, or better reasoners, to agirlyman, couldn't see the intent and had to make some noise.

Ahem. Check the sequence of posts again. Better yet, check the title of this forum: General DISCUSSION. The only "noise" I heard before the inital condescending insult was the response: "I don't get it."

I suggest you do so yourself, Jonestein. The second and third posts in this thread were by folks who didn't understand. If I don't understand something, I don't immediately and publicly declare my ignorance. I wait for clarification, or look stuff up. When these folks said they couldn't understand what was perfectly clear to some of us, they just set themselves up for the response they got. It's not really a hard concept to grasp, after all. If you don't get a subtle joke, would you want someone to ruin it for everyone by explaining it step by step? Hardly.
And why would I want to DISCUSS something I couldn't understand? Re: Bill Buckley, I have in fact corresponded with him, and would readily discuss sailing or shooting with him, but would never ask him anything about, say, Whittaker Chambers, about whom I know nothing.
