Does anyone know how to play .avi files on a mac? I can get some files to work but others only play a white screen with no sound. Any help would be appreciated.

That's a "how long is a piece of string" question. AVI is not a video format it's a file format. Usually video is compressed by something called a codec, different video formats use different codecs to encode the data. Some formats like .rm and .mpg refer to the type of codec that was used to create them. AVI's are not like that, the AVI is a file type that wraps around the video information and has a header that says how big to display the image and what codec was used to make it. If you dont have the right codec you cant play the AVI even though you could play another AVI that uses a codec you do have. That's why some play and some dont. There are some AVI codecs that dont have a Mac version, you will never find anything that will work with those files. Others may just need tuning.
Anyway, try VLC
http://www.videolan.org/mirror.php?mirror=http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/
videolan/&file=vlc/0.8.4a/macosx/vlc-0.8.4a.dmg
That will play a lot of formats (though not all avis)
