i completely agree with you about some well written books. there are some very talented sci-fi writers out there and i think it would be a great way to continue. i know it has worked well for other properties. i love comics but i am like you and it takes me little to no time to read through a stack of them. hey i know they can do a monthly comic that is 150 pages. wouldn't that be shiny.

I would love well-written books. However, there are some authors (no names mentioned...) who basically recycle certain stock phrases for which the character is well known, don't seem to put much work into coming up with a plot, and this gets passed off as an original work in whatever universe. I won't buy that. (And, thanks be, I halfway suspect that Joss wouldn't go for that.)

On an only-slightly-related note, I haven't read anything by Keith DeCandido, the author of the Serenity novelization. Has anyone read that? How good was it? Could it have stood on its own as a good novel? (Like I said, I know nothing of this person's writing style.)

good point i have had those problems with some writers as well. i think the writers who tend to use "catch phrases" probably never have taken the time to care about the character they are writing about. i would think Joss would need to have a say in a writer so they could be written by people who understand and like these characters.

The writing was pretty poor. I was real disappointed.

i can't speak for everyone, but I enjoyed it. He followed the shooting script pretty well. Any details he added seemed consistant with the characters. i had already seen the movie by the time i read the novel, so i'm not sure i'm that good of a judge on how it stands on it's own, but it references quite a few of things from the series which helps give more characterization than the movie had time for. If i had to complain about something, it would be there were too many series references. Also, it's probably not descriptive enough to stand on it's own as a novel, but personally i don't like a lot of description and the more description he had the more likely the novel might conflict with the movie. The high points for me were the character interactions and internal monologues. They seemed spot on to me and helped flesh out things from the movie. Again, a lot of this is a matter of opinion though, so your mileage may vary.

I thought the novelization was fine, though with the same problems as above. I just chalk that down to KRAD himself being a Browncoat and wanting to recap the series for anyone who might pick up the book not knowing about the background. Y'know, looking to make converts.

All the other DeCandido books I've read (various other fandoms) have been awesome, so I may be a bit biased.
