translation problem

Hi,

I just finished writing a story. It is not exaclty FanFiction, but SF and could well play in the Firefly 'Verse, it has some Blue Sun Corp. connotations in it. So I thought I try to translate it into English (it is written in German at the moment) and maybe put it in the Blue Sun Room.

Now I ran into an expression I don't know the English equivalent for, so maybe one of you native speakers can help me out. When you go fishing with rod and reel and a fish bites, you normally make a small whipping movement with the rod to get the hook to settle in nicely, so it will not slip out again when you start taking the line in. This movement is called "anschlagen" in German. Is there an English expression for it?

So, fishers respond, please then I might treat you with a story tonight.

In English, I believed it's called, "setting your hook".

Although I am not a true fisherman(lady), I have a lot of fisherman in my family!

That sounds reasonable to me. Thank you very much, you have been a great help.

Translating a fictional text (especially one you wrote yourself) to a language which is not your own is quite a challenge. I find it quite difficult to catch all the undertones and connotations of the original expressions and still give it a natural feel in the target language. I have never tried it before. I hope I do not mess up too much on this.
