In this technical but interesting article about Zoic Studios, found on the official site,

http://www.luxology.net/article/012303_Zoic/page1.aspx

are to be found some very lovely photos of Serenity. Alas, the best of the bunch has some text over a key portion of the frame, making it unsuitable for wallpaper use.

Since I lack screen-capping wares, I thought I would go to our community to see if anyone is set up to select, capture, and post some nice, high-res caps of the ship (etc.) for general consumption (e.g., from TRS80's discs).

Keep flyin'!

This is a wonderful site to get screen caps from- http://debchan.com/grabs/firefly.html

Kaythryn;

Thanks for the link. Some wonderful character shots. But there is a conspicuous absence of any FX shots, alas. I can gaze lovingly at Serenity till the cows come home (many souls...)...But I fear the wife would ultimately tire of the look on my face if the lovely li'l Ms. Frye were to adorn my desktop!

thats interesting... I've got to think that this is an early model of Serenity. It looks a bit too 'techy'... I like the worn out, just barely holding together Serenity better...

Kobayashi;
I wonder if you'd flipped through to the third page of the article. There, you'll see a pic of Serenity on final approach (to Ariel?) which looks mighty tramp-steamer-ish. that initial space shot (which never appeared on the show, but is a mainstay of publicity shots) does look quite shiny-new. But, then again, Serenity always looked less rusty and beat up out in the black than she did in atmo.

Footnote: I'm quite impressed to learn that there was no miniature of the ship, but that it was 100% rendered. Quite a statement on the state of the art (bummed as I am that there isn't a nifty-slick model out there somewhere which might show up at a con or something!)!

Keep Flyin'!

Yeah, that approach shot of Serenity landing on Aieral is not too impressive. Something looks funny about the lighting. I bet the cityscape was rendered first then Serenity was composited on top... the city and the ship are'nt reflecting the same atmospheric properties.

The 'Serenity Beta' model could maybe be used as the 'off-the-shelf' version of a Firefly-class ship. Maybe Serenity was tinkered with over time and customized.

I assume you're talking about the article's shot of Serenity versus the wallpaper from the Fox web site.

Serenity is an Aught 3 Firefly, perhaps the wallpaper Serenity is an earlier Firefly class, maybe aught one or two. I know it's not likely but humor me.

Thank you Noocyte for the article. Thank you Kaythryn for the screen caps. Anyone willing to take pics of the SFX shots? Every screen capping web site ignores the SFX. I'm sad to say I think Twoevilmonks has stopped capping episodes and Trekvideo is down. We need screen caps of SFX, the ships, tech, etc.

I would but I have dial up so it takes a century to download episodes I have only 2/7ths of Serenity downloaded and I've been at it for a week. In short three hour intervals, only got one phone line.

I have to say that on both of those pics (pages 1 and 3 of the article) the Serenity rendered there looks much more streamlined than the Serenity rendered in the Fox distributed wallpaper pic of Serenity in orbit or in any of the screencaps I have.

Plus a window or two are out of place along with some other stuff I dont have names for.

So could be that yes they did versions of Aught 1 or 2 and 3. Maybe in some part of the process in creating Serenity, Joss and crew saw the nice shiny streamlined version with one less window and solar panel and decided it was TOO nice and opted to make her a bit more beatup looking and boxy.

The page one image on the article is the Serenity used in the remade Pilot episode. The boxy one was the original Firefly design. Infact it looks as if the reaver ship that appeared in the pilot as well was another design for our beloved Firefly.
