i didnt know that microsoft was still around during the time of firefly
in the episode "trash" i thought it was great when i noticed the microsoft screen on the trash container, around the 20 min mark on the dvd.
Im not knocking it, just thought it funny when i thougtht he screen looked out of place. lol

Yes I have witnessed that. Looks more like a Macintosh error screen to me. Remember Joss says that Firefly is a mix of the past, the future and the present day. Just gives it that more believable edge. Technology is never discussed in Firefly (ok except for 'The Compression coil'). We don't know how any of that stuff works because Joss Whedon wanted it that way.

i suppose that is a good responce to that question, however im thinking it is more likely that the program that was ment to disply the correct screen crashed,lol
but i have to i could never have thought of that as a reason. lol
