Why did Maniac like Safe?

do you think that the Tam parents were actually telling the truth when they said that they thought River was ok, or do you think that they were deluding themselves, or perhaps even in on the whole thing?

One of them is in on it and the other isn't. There has to be that. Now which one is it?

Both of them are overly concerned with status and reputation because of their station in life. I think even if both of them were innocent in this matter, as soon as they heard the alliance give their sales pitch for using River, they would have sold her over in the blink of an eye.

I really liked this episode as well. I loved seeing River break out in dance, that warmed the cockles of my heart. And the scene at the end when she's tied to the stake, and Simon realizes that she has no idea what's about to happen... wow. That is such a powerful, sad moment: her sweet face contrasted with Simon's anguished face. Quickly followed by him throwing himself in the fire with her... and the music. For any girl who always wanted a brother, like me, that was a real tear-jerker of a moment.

Simon is a prince in my eyes.

Yes, River is a beautiful dancer. That irish jig she jigged to, was really some good stuff. I had a slightly different take on the end than you did though. When she was tied to the stake, I believe that Simon misinterpreted River's actions. I think he believes she has no idea what is about to happen to her, because she seems not to be worried about being tied to the stake. And so Simon's actions are truly heroic when he steps up there with her. But actually, I believe River has seen the immediate future regarding Serenity's crew returning to save them, and so she is not worried about her's or Simon's safety.

Aah, you may be right. She did say, "Daddy will come for us." I think that she is so advanced and her poor brain has been rewired so much, that when she can't find the words, she speaks in metaphor, and she may have been trying to say, "Our Captain, the one who protects us and keeps us safe."

Whether she meant Mal or not, she was right.

I would say you are probably right about this. Father Tam was very evasive when Simon was trying to explain about River's letter, but then so was Mother Tam.

I just want to say that since I first wrote this post, I have come to really appreciate "Safe" and now consider it one of my favorite episodes. Comes with watching it more than twice.
