I miss my little Browncoat pet

My cat, Corky. My family had him since about 3 years before i was born. He shares 4 out of 5 of the same letters as my name (Je suis Corey), and he was the one constant friend that wasn't actually biologically related to me. He lived to the ripe old age of 19, though, so it's not like it was tragically unjust. Doesn't make it any easier. That was Tues. May. 25/04, approx. 4:30pm. Funny how you remember specific things like that. Regardless, my first major, uber-close-to-home death. I still have all my grandparents and such. I was lucky to have gotten to 15 and a half without going through that. I'm 17 now.
My first dog, Farley. Named after the dog in For Better or For Worse. You might get the reference. Got him January 16, 2000 after our hamster died. Wasn't uber-connected with my hamster, since it didn't really live long enough to form a strong bond. Anyhow, Monday, Oct.4/04 approx. 5pm, we had to put him down like our cat, difference being he was only 5. When we got him he was 5 months old. THAT was unjust. And believe me when i say that he was the epitome of the cliche of the friendliest dog in the world. It was SO hard to lose my two best friends within 5 months of eachother. Farley had some type of cancer. Chemo would have given maybe 6 months, but it would have just been suffering, and he wouldn't have had his trademark unlimited supply of pure, undiluted energy. It would have been wrong to have that be the last chapter of his life. Doesn't make me feel any better about it though.
Also, my aforementioned hamster, Pooky. Got her on my 9th birthday, but she only lived a little over 2 years, so i never really got a chance to form the same kind of bond as with a longer-living animal.
She died on Christmas Eve. We just came home from a party thing, and my brother and i were just settling in to sleep, and our parents came and told us. Harsh stuff.
So, kind of like the person posting earlier, the memory does spring up again each Christmas.
It's not easy to relive these kinds of memories, but it's kind of liberating to get it out like this. Plus, the fact that we still mourn them or think about them only means that we still care about them.
Never replace your pets, because that betrays the memory of them. At least name the new kitten Little Star the 2nd or something. But also, don't expect the new one to be just like the old. Let them find their own way into your hearts.
I'm babbling like a moonbrain.

"We feel bad for every pet of yours that died.
Thanks, that made me feel kinda better that you told me about your sad stuff."
He's a boy of few words.
Thanks to everyone who posted, my son really took it in.
(I'll still try to talk him into a Firefly-related name for the new cat when we get it...

My condolences as well. I lost my feline "brother" (he was a kitten when we got him, and I'd just turned five) a few years back. I still think of him often. There are so many unwanted pets in the world, console yourself with the thought that you have made one life happier.
I haven't gotten another (I've been in an apartment, and hope to be again, so a cat would just be underfoot), but hope to, one day.
