no one would joke around like that w/Zoe (who can kill you with her pinky) if they were NOT a close friend...

Okay, I totally see your point, but my point is why would he be so close to Zoe in the first place? How did he become such a good friend to all of them when they haven't even been to his home before (in the movie he had to give them directions to get through the ionic cloud)?

The fact that they haven't been to his home world before leads me to think that they couldn't have seen him in person that often before either, since he hardly seems like the type that would go to the planets they go to, if he ever gets out anyway. Which leads me to think that their friendship must have been built up mainly by talking to each other via videophone, and do you really think Mal and Zoe would be so trusting of somebody that they've rarely met and only got to know in this way?

In fact, it's exactly that quote you gave that shows how close they all are that bothers me the most. Nobody on the ship except for Wash could get away with talking to Zoe like that, yet here's this guy that can take such liberties and Zoe gives him a warm smile. It doesn't make sense! Even if they had met him often before and had lots of video nights and great parties together, I really don't think that Mr Universe is the type of person that Zoe would like.

Of course, it's like you said, we hardly know Mal and Zoe, or anybody else, so maybe they would be friends with somebody like that after all, but by the evidence presented in the series I don't think Mr Universe would have a chance of becoming as close to them as he apparently is in the movie.

Just to be clear, I'm not bitching about the film. There's been a lot of that going on and I don't want to be one of those people. I'm just bitching about Mr Universe, or rather the type of close friendship he apparently had with the crew. It just seems out of character - not just to Mal and Zoe, but also the whole "feel" of the series.

don't get me wrong Khyron, I don't think you are bashing the film...
but my point was that rather than wanting evidence that the personal joking was warrented (wanting proof that Mr. U was a close friend)
I think you should instead take the personally joking as the proof that there is this close personal past relationship that we just don't happen to know about.
Joss introduced this character to us as though he was obviously known to everyone...so I think we need to say 'hey, any friend of our BDHs is a friend of ours' without needing further evidence that he is what they believe him to be.

I still hope that we'll get back stories...
not 'prequels' but like in the episode Out of Gas I hope we'll find out about Book's past, and I hope that we'll find out that Mr. U actually rode on Serenity at one point...before he got set up on his little moon....(because I'm thinking that only someone who actually had been onboard once could be that good of a friend)

Him staying on the ship for a while is of course a plausible explanation (one that I didn't think of), although if he did stay on the ship, I don't think he'd be there too long. He seems like the type that would've just wanted to go from A to B.

But obviously it's best if we get some backstories, just to know for sure. So let's hope we get them (and preferably as part of a new season on TV - that could take a while to happen, though).

Hey, I know, since there's this petition fad going on here at the moment, let's petition Joss to give us Mr Universe's backstory! He'll undoubtedly bow to the pressure of seeing a list of signatures and be forced to ingeniously include the backstory in Wonder Woman in some way. Problem solved! Khyron's a genius!
