This is off-topic, but I hate to see the "shrines" that people create for victims of accidents or violence. The shrines start with photos and cards and wreathes, then as the news spreads you see the stuff you can buy at any supermarket's gift sections: flowers in cones, Mylar balloons, stuffed animals. BALLOONS and TOYS to denote GRIEF -- I will never understand it. Remember when Princess Diana died, the TV news showed the area outside Buckingham Palace: acres of the stuff: flowers and balloons and toys. I thought, "They'll need a bulldozer to get rid of the stuff."

The same things are sent for joy, or something. Every popular ice skater completes his/her routine to a barrage of flowers and toys from strangers (I guess they're not willing to deflate the balloons).

It means a lot more to the sender than the recipient. If someone if my family should die, I hope mourners send cards, mostly, or flowers, if there's no way around it. Leave the balloons and toys at home. Send them to children you KNOW.
