I need to come up with a 3D model of an Alliance cruiser. Detail isn't essential; it just needs to look good from a distance.

Has anyone undertaken the task of modeling one, do you know? Or am I going to have to start from scratch and hope for the best?

Sorry for the late reply, just saw your post.

When I've finished my model of Serenity (few months most likely), I was planning on make a 3DS Max model of the cruiser. I've just started collecting refrence images.

Nothing yet started though, and It'll be a while till I start, let alone finish...

OK, if detail isn't essential and it will be at a distance, could you get by with mapping a 2d image to a plane? For big ships that are "parked in orbit" in a distant shot that can be an effective timesaver.

Of course, if you're close enough to be changing perspective that doesn't work so well.

^That may actually be an option. Not an ideal one, and not a final solution.....but perhaps interim.

It depends on what angles are available on the ship.

Therein may lie the rub...if I remember correctly we only see the cruisers clearly from a handful of angles. Hopefully there is enough there to get you something happy. If I can pry my wife off of Sims tonight I may take a look at what it would take to do a "background quality mockup".

The ideal angle would be 45° off vertical----more or less SimCity2000-ish. But I don't think anything quite like that is available.
